2024 Opening Day is in the books for our local teams, and the results are not good. My Cubs lost in Texas in extra innings, while the Sox got skunked in front of the only packed house they’ll have all year. Only 161 games to go…
It was actually decent weather for the Sox opener. Sure, it was a little chilly, but that sun was warm; it was a nice reward for all in attendance. The difference in attendance between the opener and the 2nd game of the year is drastic; this is a common theme for many teams, especially those playing in colder weather. The difference with the Sox is that this trend will continue all year, because they suck. I actually bet on them to NOT suck. Their over/under win total was 61.5; the Sox aren’t THAT bad right? They can lose 100 games and I can still win my bet for God’s sake. I also took a piece of Luis Robert’s over home run total of 29.5, figuring with the pressure down, he’ll be able to hit some nukes. Well, it was a bad day for both of those bets. I just read something on Twitter from Jay Cuda. The Sox became the 2nd team in MLB history to have 0 runs, walks, and extra base hits with 10 Ks on Opening Day since it happened to the Giants against Bob Gibson! Now I like Tarik Skubal and all, but… welcome to the 2024 season Sox fans.
At least the Cubs had a chance to win their opener. We were going against the defending World Series champs, the Texas Rangers, in their house, so you can excuse this loss, but… we did have Justin Steele on the mound, and then we didn’t. Game one and Steele is hurt; welcome to the 2024 season? Brutal way to start the year, and then we went on to blow a lead in the 9th and lose in extras? I couldn’t watch; I was watching college basketball instead. Why you ask? Because I was already losing my patience with my Cubbies; shit, it’s going to be a long year. It’s essentially the same team the Cubs run back, and excuse me if that bothers me. Grab the best manager in MLB (per experts) and add absolutely the minimum; great plan. I sure hope our better than average farm system hits. I’m sorry. Of course, I’m excited for the MLB season to start; I love seeing my Cubs play. But, I’m just not that excited about this team; it feels like a carbon copy of last year. If Steele misses some time… I don’t know.
Yes, after the opener, it’s always time to overreact. The Sox can surely win 62 games right? The Cubs won’t be blowing leads, losing in extra innings, and losing their best players to injury every game right? Whew… deep breath. Yeah, like Pat always tells us in a close game heading to the 9th, fasten your seat belts Cubs fans… It may be a white knuckle ride this year. Welcome back baseball! Go Cubs!
