Two names that will forever be linked in Chicago Bears history… Matt Nagy and Mitch Trubisky have both been in the news, for much different reasons. Nagy, the offensive coordinator for the Chiefs, is celebrating his 2nd Super Bowl title. Meanwhile, Trubisky has been cut by the Steelers. Remember when they were both Bears?
Yes, I remember. That year was pretty fricking good. I was all aboard the Nagy and Trubisky train, as would any Bears fan as we stormed into the playoffs that year. Sure, we weren’t talking Reid and Mahomes, but… for us, it was enough, at least for that one year, until it wasn’t… Who would have thunk it would have been a kicker that sank our season? Ignoring all the signs during the season, we hung onto that scrub, and it cost us; I blame Nagy for that. Nagy, in his first head coaching gig, was able to run all his gimmicky plays to perfection; Trubisky was a great beneficiary of that. Mitch wasn’t so horrible that year either. Of course, it was the defense that really stood out, as has been the case with most of the Bears great seasons over the years. In year 2 though, things fell apart. Nagy’s play calling became predictable, and Trubisky couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn with many of his passes. Both were at fault. Now that both have moved on to their next chapter, what have we learned?
Well, it’d be nice to have Patrick Mahomes on your roster for one. Nagy’s play calling wasn’t awesome IMO, although I really didn’t watch a ton of Chiefs games, but it was enough, especially in the big game on Sunday. This is back to back now for the Chiefs, and Nagy has to share in some of that credit. Maybe his niche is the coordinator position… I thought Mitch would be a really good backup QB; I thought, like Chase Daniel, he could carve out a nice little career, and build up a nice bank account, with this position. Although I don’t think the dream is over, it didn’t work out so well in his 2nd stop since Chicago. From Buffalo to Pittsburgh, Mitch did not stick. Maybe the next opportunity he gets will be better for him; maybe he can hold on to that backup QB role. You know, you will have to play good in your limited opportunities though Mitch, to hold onto that position. Not our problem any more.
We have our own problems. To Fields or not to Fields, that is the question. We already answered the Getsy question, although how much of an upgrade is this Waldron dude? Is Fields closer to Patrick Mahomes or Mitch Trubisky? Certainly nowhere near Mahomes’ level… certainly nowhere near Trubisky’s level. I don’t know. Will we find out the answer this year with Fields wearing a Bears uniform, or will we find out that answer with Fields wearing another uniform? The NFL offseason has just begun. Stay tuned.
