The picks are in. The Bears added 6 new players in the past few days in this year’s NFL draft. Let’s take a look:
1st round: WR Kevin White- West Virginia
2nd round: DT Eddie Goldman- Florida State
3rd round: C Hroniss Grasu- Oregon
4th round: RB Jeremy Langford- Michigan State
5th round: S Adrian Amos- Penn State

It’s hard to argue against that first pick. Although I did want defense, he WAS the best available player at the time. I think (I hope) that was a common theme throughout the draft for the Bears. I guess I can’t be totally against that. I figured they’d draft defense heavy from here on out. I just look at it like this…. you dump maybe the Bears best WR in history in Marshall for a 5th round pick, and you draft a WR in the 1st round. I wasn’t heartbroken over the departure of Marshall, but if we needed a WR, why let him go for basically nothing? It would be the same thing if we were to part ways with TE Bennett, unless you’re good with Bear Pascoe taking over at that spot.
Anyways, in round 2, I was very happy. How cool is it to have your name announced by Dick Butkus? Well, that’s what happened to Eddie Goldman. The position was definitely needed. The fact that he played for a big time school was a plus too. In round 3, I wanted more defense, but… we got a Center. I guess out of the entire OL that is the one we needed the most. Again, we let go of Garza, OK maybe he was over the hill, and signed Will Montgomery to take his spot, but then draft one too. The one thing I DO like about this pick is that he is a 4 year starter at a decent school, and DID play with Kyle Long. Long was a suspect pick in my mind, but he turned out pretty good. Maybe his buddy follows that path.
Drafting a RB in round 4 I thought was stupid. We just drafted one last year, AND we have one of the best in the league currently who still has a couple years left in my opinion. Not until the 5th round did we address one of our biggest needs and draft a S who may not even make the squad. Then, we finish off with another pick on offense to bolster our line depth. I thought the OL was one of our strengths, and we spent 2 picks on it… but what do I know?
I’d have to give it a C. After the 1st 2 picks, I’m pretty skeptical. My biggest problem is that we didn’t go more heavy defensively, but… we did sign a bunch of new defensive guys in the offseason. I guess the Bears want to go that route to build a defense??? Yet, they draft guys on offense, besides Kevin White, that are backups… Was it truly best available? Besides Goldman in the 2nd, I thought we could have done better. My 2nd biggest problem is that we didn’t draft a QB. So we’re drafting a backup Center, a backup RB, and a backup Tackle, but not a backup QB? The Packers and Saints drafted QBs, and they’re currently set at the position. But the Bears, nope… It’s not like I thought this draft was QB heavy… even with the first two overall picks being QBs, I’m not sold that they’ll be stars. Maybe it’s my Cutler hate that made me want to draft a QB, OR maybe it just makes sense. Cutler and Claussen are the guys we’re running out there this year with no future in sight…
All these offseason signings, and all these draft picks combine with the current roster to make a rough draft of the 2015 Bears final roster. When all the final cuts are made, I got a feeling that this team will look a lot different out on the field… at least the players that we run out there. We may need a score book to keep up with the changes, to know who each of those guys are. At the end of the day, that’s not such a bad thing. It can’t get any worse than last year, and we need to give the new regime the benefit of the doubt… for now. That final roster will look totally different than the 2014 Bears; let’s hope they play totally different too.

It seemed like the Bears draft strategy was to go after best available. I have no idea why they would draft a rb when they did so last year. 4 offensive vs 2 defensive…not sure I agree with it, but if the Bears were going after best available, it is hard to argue that. Like every sport, depth is key, but especially in football with so many injuries. So the Bears are definitely getting deeper, if not better at the same time. Lets hope all of the offseason moves pay dividends immediately so we, the fans, do not have to sit through another season like 2014. BEAR DOWN!!!

For a truly fair assessment of this draft, we need to wait for three to five years.
The really important question for Bears fans can only be answered in three to five years and that question is: was picking Eddie Goldman a better pick than Garrett Grayson, who was taken by New Orleans only three picks later as 1) the heir to their currently 36 year old pro bowl QB, Drew Brees, and 2) only the third QB off the board. In three years, if Grayson is tearing up the league, then it will be difficult to argue that this is a good draft. New Orleans??? Isn’t that where Ryan Pace came from??? Hopefully, the master is not giving the student a harsh lesson.
