The Blackhawks took us for another ride Friday night. With a 3-0 start in the 1st period, this series seemed like the one between these 2 teams the past 2 years. Then, the Hawks had their 3 goal period meltdown, which thankfully ended with a goal of our own. That’s the way it ended, and the Hawks grabbed the series lead.
I was primed to watch this whole game… As 8:30 rolled around, I was watching the end of King’s Speech; great movie by the way. Once the speech was over, I flipped to NBC Sports Network, and saw that the Canadiens and Lightning were still going. Then I started to scramble around trying to find the Hawks. I’m not sure if they showed it from the start of the game, or I just missed it, but by the time I found it, the Hawks were up 1-0. I eventually saw a replay of that Saad goal, and that was sweet. I settled in for the rest of the 1st and saw a beautiful Richards to Kane sniper shot, then Kruger doing work in front of the net. As the 1st period came to an end, it was time for the nightly routine of books then sleep for the boy. I figured it was a safe spot to do it; Hawks big lead, I’ll catch the third… By that time, the game will probably be out of reach.
As I checked my phone, I saw 3-1, then 3-2, then 3-3 and a text from my Dad saying “Lazy D. We’ve seen this movie before. How many times did the Hawks give up 3 goal periods to Nashville… well, in 4 separate games actually. This cannot be a recipe for success. Thankfully, they have the fire power to overcome it, but it definitely isn’t for the faint of heart. As I made my way back to the TV towards the end of the 2nd, I saw the Teuvo shot give the Hawks the lead, and eventually the win.

Back to that Hawks firepower for a second… These guys, Saad, Kane, and now Teuvo, are some talented dudes. We all know about Kane, and if you’ve been watching, you know about Saad. And now Teuvo… he looks pretty good to me. He definitely has some skills. I guess this firepower was a little too much for the Minnesota goalie. Here’s this guy coming in red hot, being talked about as this brick wall, this guy who’s going to lead the Wild past the Hawks… yeah, well, this isn’t St. Louis. Still, he probably was a little shell shocked playing against the mighty Hawks in the UC in Game 1 of the 2nd round of the playoffs, but he has never seen the offensive skill possessed by the Hawks. When this offense is rolling, there isn’t any better. And with all these 3 period goals we’ve been giving up, that’s a very good thing.
But what happens when the offense slows down for a game, and only tallies 1-2 goals. Well, that is where the concern is. That is where we really need to buckle up. The Hawks will have to tighten up their defense regardless of who is in goal. And the goalie, which will most likely be Crawford from here on out, will have to play better too. They won one they could have easily lost, but we’ll take it.
So get ready for another ride… 5 wins down, 11 to go. Da da da da da da da…
