Patrick Mahomes is 10-1-1 ATS as an underdog. We will hear this underdog angle played up the next week and a half leading up to the Super Bowl. Obviously, based on that record, there is some substance to it. But let’s not get it twisted. The biggest underdog angle isn’t the fact that the Niners will be favored by a couple points over the Chiefs, if that even holds true once kickoff time comes along, it’s the QB comparison. When you look at Patrick Mahomes, the first round pick, future HOF, NFL golden boy, best QB of all time eventually vs the last pick in the NFL draft… not the first round, of the entire draft, Brock Purdy. You tell me who the true underdog is?
Purdy hasn’t gotten his due most of the time. If he doesn’t get hurt in last year’s NFC Championship game, this may be a whole different conversation. But injuries happen, and guys come back from them, sometimes. Brock has come back and lead the highest rated NFL team throughout the season. Sure, it hasn’t been without low moments, like the Monday Night game against the Ravens on Christmas Day. It took until that point for Purdy to get serious MVP consideration, and then in one fell swoop, one bad game, he plummeted, and Lamar was given the title; hope Lamar has a good game on Sunday… oops.
It’s Shanahan… he’s the offensive genius. Anybody can do well at the QB position with his play calling. No, it’s the weapons. CMC, Deebo, Aiyuk, and oh yeah, Kittle… anybody can succeed with that much talent on the offensive side of the ball. If all this was true, then tell me where Trey Lance is; what’s Jimmy G up to nowadays? Brock Purdy is legit. He deserves a ton of credit. Sure, it’s a team game, and we know that it’s more than just the QB, or as a Bears fan, it’s about every other position on the field BUT the QB in my lifetime, but yeah… the QB gets most of the blame when the team is losing; they get most of the credit when they’re winning. Doesn’t feel that way with Brock, and that’s OK… at least for this betting angle in the Super Bowl.
You like betting on underdogs? You like betting on guys with a chip on their shoulder? Let me introduce you to Brock Purdy. Sure, he’s not out there running his mouth, saying me, me, what about me. He goes out there and does his thing, period. Any interest on betting him as the game’s MVP? If the Niners win, then… then it will be somebody else who gets the credit. CMC, Deebo, or maybe even Kittle… or if the Niners D plays better than expected, maybe somebody on that unit, Bosa, Warner, Greenlaw, although a defensive player getting MVP is pretty rare, unless your name is Richard Dent… Bears HOFer and ex-49er btw. But yeah, it will be somebody else getting the credit, and you know what? Purdy would probably be totally fine with it. Here’s a guy that barely got drafted, and now, he’s starting for his team in the Super Bowl against the NFL darling and media hype machine Mahomes and the Chiefs.
