The NFL draft is almost upon us. Who do you want?
It’s going to be the first draft for the new regime. I remember how excited I was about the first draft for the previous regime. I don’t sit there and watch the entire draft. I’m definitely flipping between whatever else and the draft ensuring that I’m locked in during the Bears picks. I’ll never forget how pissed off I was after the pick that year was announced. Shea McClellin. WTF?!? I understand we’ve had some success with small schools over the year in the draft. I’m not saying Boise State is a small school, but Idaho?!? I don’t mind that we reach outside the box and make an unconventional pick; that sometimes works too. However, when I heard his name announced as our first round pick, I was furious.
It didn’t work out, except for the small footnote for his career, the thing that all Bears fans will remember him by, and that is, knocking Aaron Rodgers out; he couldn’t even do that right. Emery was not horrible in the draft, unlike his predecessors. We’ve discussed this at some length in the past. He’s made a lot of good picks too; many of which remain the core of this team. How will the Pace crew do?
At the 7th overall pick, there really is no screwing it up, right? The talent will be there. However, it’s always a crap shoot. There are always busts in the first round. But at #7!?!? We’re going to get a good football player; someone who we should be able to plug right into the starting lineup. The bad thing about the Bears is that there are many needs, but on Draft Day that is a good thing. So, we’re not locked in on one position, hoping we get our guy. We have some flexibility.

I’m still of the opinion that we go defense. I know we’ve stocked up on the defense with our off season signings, yet we still have needs. I’d be OK with pretty much any defensive position. In our passing league today, and looking at our division, bolstering the secondary is never a bad thing. Adding premier pass rushers is also a good thing. As a Bear fan, it would always be nice to see some stud LB get drafted, and follow in the footsteps of great Bear LBs before him. Anybody on defense is OK with me.
I know we’re talking about offense too, like a WR. I’d still prefer defense with that pick, but… it there is someone that they just love. And no, not the someone that they love but nobody else has heard of. I’m talking about a highly ranked guy that everybody would love to have that we have the opportunity to get; in other words, the best player available. I don’t think that is ever a bad philosophy, especially with a team like ours that could use all the help it could get.
It’s pretty cool that the maiden voyage for this regime is taking place IN Chicago. For the first time in 50 years, the draft is being held in our backyard. My buddy just sent me a picture of his ticket; 4th row from where the commissioner will be announcing the Bears pick. I’m actually planning on heading down to check out “draft town” too this weekend. I was reading a little bit about the draft, and how Radio City Music Hall in New York was booked, so the NFL needed a plan B. I guess it came down to Chicago and LA… for some strange reason a team that doesn’t have an NFL football team was considered, but, they made the right call. I read that Chicago is within 500 miles for 11 different NFL teams, and you know that there will be some of those fans making the trek. You know there will be fans flying in for this. I don’t think they’ll be disappointed. The NFL is doing it up BIG, and heck, even the weather is finally warming up. The NFL is making this a huge production. I wouldn’t be surprised if this stays in Chicago going forward.
So we wait for the first pick… we wait to see that #7 pick made right here in front of OUR fans. I hope it’s a good one. I hope it’s not met with a chorus of boos. I hope this regime’s first pick is memorable, for all the right reasons. We’ll find out tomorrow night. The Bears are on the clock!

I think we go D 1st round even if stud receivers are available. The Bears are supposed to be built on D, and we have gotten away from that in years past. It is time to make this squad the Monsters of the Midway again…time for a hard hitting safety and/or lb, or someone who can rush the qb all day long! Lets not screw this pick up in front of the home crowd! BEAR DOWN!!!

i got a few days behind last week and missed the chance to congratulate you on a full year of blogging! still wonder sometimes how you find the stuff to talk about on a daily basis. i may have a few ‘different’ thoughts on some of the stuff you write, but overall, good job, and good luck going into your sophomore year……..

Draft for the Bears must go like this LB,CB,DE,DT. Trade up to snag Cooper or White for a solid WR, or trade down into the 2nd round. Bears need a LOT of defensive help plus a WR2. if it was me, I would trade out of the 1st round. It will be an unpopular move since the draft is in Chicago, but sometimes you got to go against the grain.
