April 25, 2015: Changing Winds

I was driving down Fullerton this morning and saw a advertisement for the 2015 Cubs.  It said, The Winds Are Changing.  I like that.  I see that.  It’s early, but there are definitely some good things happening at Wrigley Field these days.

The Cubs won last night, this time in extra innings.  They are 3-0 this year in these type of affairs.  They also have comeback in a handful of games too.  If you flip back to last year, the Cubs were horrendous in close games… specifically one run games.  They also almost never came back in a ball game.  These are 2 things that have already changed this year.

It’s a great thing when you have the feeling like your team is never out of a game; it’s even better when that team believes it too.  This is what I see so far.  Good to the last at bat.  Now they haven’t won every close game, and they’ve lost some games they appeared to have won, but there definitely seems like a change in attitude.  They are playing with confidence.  They are playing like they know they’re good.

It’s not good to be overconfident, but you definitely have to believe in yourself.  Is this something Joe Maddon has helped bring to the table?  Is this something that has triggered this year since the team is halfway decent after sucking for 3 years?  Is this an attitude that these young guys are bringing because they don’t know any better?  Maybe a combination of all of the above.

I really like Joe Maddon.  There is not one moment of regret for dumping Ricky Renteria to grab him.  He’s one of the best in the game.  He thinks outside of the box.  He doesn’t just go by the numbers, although he is a big believer of saber metrics.  He goes with his gut.  He bats the pitcher 8th.  He brings that positive attitude to the team, that is reflected on the field.  He has a great outlook on the game, and life in general.  This has definitely been infectious.

I think about some of the Cubs who have been on the team for a while, like Rizzo and Castro.  How good does it have to feel for these guys to finally be winning?  After enduring the last 3 years of horrible baseball, it has to be refreshing.  It has to add that extra pep in your step.  To know, coming to work every day, that you have a very good chance to win; that’s enough to change an attitude.

What about these young guys?  Yeah, you know what, they don’t know any better.  Yeah, that’s working now, but what happens when fall rolls around and the Cubs are playing postseason baseball.  Well, let’s not worry about that right now.  Long way to go to start talking about that…

Yet, that’s the thing.  I think this team believes they will get there.  I think they will get there too.  I see things I’m not used to seeing.  I’m seeing prospects, like Soler and Bryant, come up and actually look like all stars in the making.  Yeah, we’ve had our swings and misses over the years, but these look like long balls.  I see a team that brushes stuff off.  We’ve had our share of bullpen problems already this year, yet it doesn’t sink the team when it happens.  It’s like, OK, this happened, now what.  And the now what has been let’s go out and get those runs back, or let’s go out and make this comeback.  I see it.

It’s great for a Cubs fan to see, but I temper this excitement.  First off, the Bulls and Hawks are in the playoffs; that is top of mind right now.  And, I know it’s way too early to get too excited.  Yet… this excitement is building.  This excitement that hasn’t been there for the Cubs in a long time.  It’s great to see these changing winds.  I can’t wait to see how this season unfolds.
