November 27, 2023: Winning Bearly

Everybody heard of winning ugly; how about winning BEARLY?!?! The Bears did it again, in a way only they can, beating the Vikings on a last minute field goal, their 4th of the game (0 TDs btw), to win 12-10. I can only apologize to the national TV audience so many times, but… I’m NOT going to apologize for winning a game in the NFL. As everyone can tell you, well, maybe not everybody, but especially Bears fans, we’ll take any win we can get.

They haven’t all been ugly. What am I saying… we only have 4 wins on the season, and 2 of them have been ugly as sin. The game against the Panthers, and now this? The Commanders game was the best of the season for us, with the Raiders a close second. We can talk about those games we SHOULD have won, like the Broncos and the Lions; a lot of good that would do us. No, I’d much rather have an ugly win than a game we should have won. I will never apologize for a win. The fact that most of America had to watch this debacle, well… it’s a free country.

How many WR screens can one team throw in a single game? We’ve had our share of offensive “gurus”, like John Shoop, Marc Trestman for starters. I recall Shoop’s favorite play call was a 5 yard pass when it was 3rd and 8. Trestman, well, I don’t even want to think about that guy, but I do know we practiced really well under him… But yeah, Getsy… please check into the playbook and find some other plays to call, for God’s sake. I don’t really get it. We need to turn Justin loose. We’ve seen him throw the ball down the field; he can do it. We’ve seen him scramble and buy himself more time; he can do that too. And yes, on the flip side, we’ve seen him take too long to make a decision, take unnecessary sacks, and have critical turnovers; you have to take the good with the bad, yes? Well, thankfully the good barely eeked out the bad on Monday night in Minnesota. Talk about the WR screens, the Fields fumbles, and one thing that frustrates me… when Fields throws it right into a defender’s facemask… all of that doesn’t feel good, but… part of the evaluation process for Fields, at least something that should be part of it, is winning. He did enough to win, and that counts… a lot!

With Eberflus having to take on the defensive duties of this team, which by the way, has been working pretty damn good, the offense still needs some attention. Is it on Eberflus because he’s too worried about the D? Is it on Getsy because he’s calling the plays? Is it on Justin because he cannot execute everything in that play book? I don’t know, maybe a combination of things, but I’d much rather be talking about these issues after a win than a loss. The only problem is that we don’t really have much more time. Sure, this season will not end in a playoff appearance, but it can still turn out to be a mild success. Deciding on the future of Fields is of utmost importance, considering how high we will be picking in the draft again, considering all the good QBs coming out. Are we there yet?

With this win in Minnesota, the Bears have surpassed their win total from last year. With the last drive of the game, the Bears covered all my bets for the game… Fields passing yards, Fields rushing yards, and most importantly, a Bears win. The funny thing about it… I didn’t even get to see it. I got a phone call from my neighbor in the 2nd half; my other neighbor’s house was on fire…
