April 21, 2015: Busy Days

There are some days where there isn’t much going on. There are some days where I have to get creative. Today is not one of those days.

We just came off a big Blackhawks win at the UC; we’ll stay there for the first story of the day. The Bulls went up 2-0 in their series with Milwaukee.  Now, unlike many Blackhawks fans, Bulls fans WILL be allowed in the visiting venue. Watch out Bradley Center… You too will be seeing red.

The Bulls saw red a couple times last night. A couple dust ups were part of last night’s activities. After Brooks got shoved down, guys went face to face with a couple techincals.  Later, after a loose ball scrum, an ejection occurred.  Zaza Pachulia, although sometimes a nice fantasy basketball fill in, is dirty.  With him and Ilyasova on the court for the Bucks, it starts to feel like Eastern Promises (movie reference!). Mirotic fit right in, and went toe to toe with Zaza. I’m sure the Bucks would take that trade off. It worked, but it didn’t matter. Zaza got ejected, and Nikola went to the bench banged up; they’re saying he’ll be OK. This is what the Bucks were going to have to resort to.  I miss playoff basketball.

The man of the night was Jimmy Butler.  Continuing his break out season, Buckets scored a playoff career high in Game 1, then surpassed that in Game 2 with 31 points.  He was on one of those rolls, where it was like get him the ball, and get out of the way.  Oh yeah, and how about that dunk over Pachulia?  “Meet me at the rim, and don’t be late, Zaza Pachulia”… courtesy Stacey King.  Maybe that’s one reason Zaza was a little upset.  I put Jimmy Butler in the Players Club a little premature maybe… because he was the Bulls best player early in the season.  Well, he looks to be much more than that.  He’s going to be key for us, and if he continues to play inspired ball, along with everybody else, the Bulls will be a tough out… for anybody.

Baseball was exciting last night too.  Sox scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 9th to beat Cleveland.  They really needed that with their early season struggles.  They also called up own of their top prospects in Carlos Rodon.  I love the move, yet how will they work it with him?  Pitch him out of the bullpen early to save his pitch count?  Would he be better starting games, even if it were in the minors?  I’d have to think he’ll be starting very soon for the Sox.  Cubs won again last night too, with Bryant & Arrieta leading the way.  Bryant, after his first rough game, is batting .429 now… watch out.  By the way, the Cubs made another move…. calling up Addison Russell.  With that name, you’d think he was born to play at Wrigley.  The Cubs are coming…

It wasn’t all good news yesteday…. Chicago lost a legend with the passing of Doug Buffone.  I was too young to see him play, but heard he was a beast…. the original double nickel, before Mama Boy’s Otis, BBQ Briggs, and MJ’s 55 at MSG.  Even though I didn’t see him play, I got a pretty good impression of him listening to the Score.  His Bears postgame shows with Ed O’Bradovich were gold.  These guys were Bears FOR LIFE.  They were die hard fans like you and me.  This year being especially brutal, was especially entertaining to listen to.  These guys would hold nothing back, ripping into the guys.  And no, not because they hated them, or the Bears, because they LOVED them.  Only die hards can do this… they loved the Bears so much… they played for them… they had the right to say anything they wanted.  And then there was Big Doug… the segment every Friday during football season.  I laughed my ass off many mornings listening to Doug Buffone play bookie with Mully and Hanley.  Classic stuff.

It doesn’t slow down around here, that’s for sure.  There is always something going on, and a whole lot of good lately.  Let’s hope that our teams continue to play with the same heart and enthusiasm as Doug brought to the table.  If they can do that, everything is going to be OK.  RIP Doug.

Buckets was a beast yesterday! He is playing for his max contract next year, hopefully after he helps the Bulls win it all! They have looked good through the 1st two games, but then it is only the bucks. This is a tuneup for next round…here’s hoping the Bulls are ready to slay the queen and his bitches!
