October 15, 2023: The Return to the Gutter

Well, my happiness in the Bears lasted almost 10 days… I was flying high, and had my confidence back heading into this Sunday’s noon tilt with the Grimace impersonators. With Jefferson out, and Cousins still hanging on to that QB spot, I thought we could keep the mojo going; I was wrong. I was dead wrong. It was the return to the gutter for the Bears on Sunday; they brought all of us with them.

Funny thing is, no matter how bad we played, throw on top of that the Fields injury, we STILL had a chance to win that game before the dumbest play of the day, the INT by Bagent the backup QB. Not like preseason huh kid? Hey, I’m all about giving chances to people; this was his chance. He may get more by the way; sounds like Fields may be out a minute. His first drive, he was strip sacked, fumbled the ball, and saw the Vikes run it in for a score; great first impression. Yet, he bounced back; he looked… serviceable. He lead a TD drive that pulled us within a score; he was leading another drive into Vikings territory with 2 minutes left. Then, he tried to be a hero, and throw it up for grabs to DJ Moore who was one on one. The throw came up woefully short. Thing is, he didn’t even have to do that. It was first down, we still had 2 minutes left; rookie mistake I guess. And that was that… another Bears loss in the books.

We should have known it was going to be a long day based on the first play of the game. Vikings dude comes in completely unblocked and rocks Justin Fields from the blind side. How can we truly judge Justin Fields? In such an important year for the Bears, and specifically Justin Fields, we have to somehow account for the play of the offensive line when we’re passing judgment on Fields; there is the play calling too. How can we accurately do that? Maybe like some say, Fields isn’t the guy; they’ve been saying that for a while. Maybe they’re right. And, maybe the Bears will move on after this year, and, maybe… Fields will go elsewhere and be an absolute stud. Maybe Fields IS the guy, but we just haven’t seen it yet; how long do we wait? It’s Zach Lavine’s 10th year in the league by the way, and we’re still waiting for him, so… But it’s the NFL; we can’t wait that long. It’s a put up or shut up league, and when you’re talking QBs, it’s even more urgent; when you’re the QB of a team that hasn’t had a franchise QB since before most of today’s fans were born… yeah, if you don’t know, now you know. Now the next complication… an injury. How long will he be out? Again, this injury couldn’t come at a worse time. I believe if Fields was able to continue, maybe we win this game. I know, I know… maybe we don’t, but I would have loved to see it. Can’t always get what you want.

What we did get, was another slap in the face, punch in the gut, kick in the nuts. With the first win in forever, I was back getting hyped up about the possibilities looking ahead at a weak schedule. Thing is… when people see us on their schedule, that’s considered a weak part too. Up next, is a battle of weak teams. It’s the Raiders vs the Bears, which alone doesn’t provide excitement, but now it may feature 2 backup QBs?!?! Get ready for a nice long nap on Sunday. Bears Down…
