OK, I guess I have to talk about it. I was hoping the Cubs would bounce back on Wednesday night in Atlanta after an absolutely heart-wrenching loss on Tuesday night. Well, so much for that. Not quite as bad as Tuesday, but another shot to the Cubs playoffs hopes, which at this point, seem to be slipping away.
We’re still tied for the 3rd wild card spot; that’s the good news. So yes, we still control our own destiny, which is where you want to be. However… the mojo is not good. What a horrible way to lose a game on Tuesday. After running out to a big lead with our ace on the mound, it felt like things were in control, but… it’s the Braves we’re talking about; hard not to feel like they’re the best team in baseball. It was 6-0 in the 6th inning… the Braves scored 3 in the 6th, and 2 in the 7th, which set the stage for a moment that will most certainly rank up there among the worst of all time; how high will depend on if the Cubs end up getting in or not. Depending on how long you’ve been a Cubs fan, you may be very familiar with these types of moments, and the feelings that they bring; I am. You know, the whole 2016 thing… washed away a lot of pain, made me be OK with all the previous choke moves by the Cubbies. Seeing Suzuki drop a fly ball with 2 outs in the bottom of the 8th that allowed the tying and go-ahead run to score… flashbacks. Brant Brown’s dropped fly ball was trending again on Twitter. I must not have been watching that game when it happened, because I don’t recall it that well, unless it was just one of those that I suppressed way down there… there’s a big room down there… ha. Yeah, I didn’t see this live either, but when I heard, and watched it, oh boy… I thought this game was in the bag, and proceeded with the nightly routine. When I checked my phone and saw… ouch is one way to put it.
That’s OK; our boys will bounce back. After going down 1-0 in the first, the Cubs scored 3 in the next 2 innings to hold another lead as we headed into the late innings. Up 3-1 going to the bottom of the 7th, the Braves started chipping away. 1 in the 7th, 1 in the 8th to tie it up… buckle those seat belts Cubs fans. Gomes came up with a huge go ahead single in the top of the 9th; OK, OK… Atlanta promptly tied it in the bottom of the 9th, then in the 10th, after the Cubs scored 1, the Braves scored 2… game, set, match. Two of the worst losses of the season coming at absolutely the worst time. You see how I feel like this is slipping away???
Well, the best thing about baseball, is that another game follows soon after, until the season is over. The Cubs season is NOT over yet. We knew the Sox weren’t going to do us any favors, losing the first two games to the D-backs. At this point, I’m not even worried about them. It’s the Marlins, yeah, I hate that team, that is tied with us for the 3rd and final wild card spot, with the Reds still lurking 1.5 games out. Go Mets and Go Pirates! And of course, Go Cubs! Nobody thought we’d be here right now, but since we are… it would be a real bummer to not get in. The Cubs have bounced back all season; can they do it one more time? Go Cubs!!!
