April 14, 2015: Back in the Saddle

Yeah, it was great to see that skyline again.  First thing I did, was turn on that AM radio.  I knew the Cubs and the Bulls were both playing last night.

I flipped to AM 1000.  Man it was good to hear Swirsky and Wennington.  It was even better to hear the Bulls kicking the Nets’ ass.  It was great to hear Rose play well; I’m still so happy he’s back.  I would have been really pissed had he not come back, but he did.  And now, the Bulls are finally healthy at the end of a season.  Wait, there’s still one game to go.  Gasol had another big game… what else is new, while Mirotic couldn’t miss.  They were going crazy on the radio as Mirotic hit three after three late in the 3rd.  The Bulls outscored them by 20 in the second half.

They’re warming up for the playoffs.  I believe the first tiebreaker is head to head, and since the Bulls have owned the Raptors, the Bulls would clinch the 3 seed and a date with the Bucks with a win Wednesday night at home against Atlanta.  If they falter, and Toronto wins out (at Boston, home vs Charlotte), the Bulls will face the same team they faced in last year’s postseason… yep, the hated Wizards.  All along I’ve said as long as we’re healthy, it doesn’t matter who we play.  Sure, it would be nice if the playoffs were to break out in nice matchups for us, but the health is more important than that.  This Bulls team at full health should be ready to take on anyone.  We get to see that starting this weekend.

Then I flipped to 720 AM, WGN, for the Cubs broadcast…. but there was nothing.  Oh yeah, no more WGN for the Cubs… that’s weird.  The next preset on my radio was AM 780, and there was good old Pat Hughes with partner Ron Coomer.  Pat Hughes may be the best radio guy we got in the city… although as I’ve mentioned previously, we’ve got a few… and NO, I’m not talking about Ed Farmer and Darrin Jackson… horrible.

Lester got hit hard again.  Are you worried yet?  I’m really not, but I am getting doubt in my head for that jersey I picked for my son.  It’s only 2 games.  This guy is really trying to do well, and he will…. he hasn’t yet.  You know, it would be a lot different if the Cubs were like 1-5 or 2-4.  Then I could see a little more heat coming his way, but with a 4-2 record so far, I lay off… for now.  We bailed him out tonight, and a big part of it was Jorge Soler.

I heard he had hit a home run in the 1st, and got to hear the game tying one in the 8th on the radio.  I let out a good old fashioned YEAH, as my dog just looked at me.  This is what I’m talking about.  Oh yeah, and then I saw the throw he made from right field earlier in the game.  WOW!  And how about some good timing for the first hit of the season for Alcantara?  The game winning single in the 10th was beautiful.  After reading how the Cubs won on Sunday, a 2 out, 2 strike, 2 run HR by Fowler to give us the lead and win, we get another come from behind W.  These are big wins, even if they are early in the season… even if we are only 6 games in.  You start to believe.  Yeah, as a fan you always want to believe, but as a player and a team… to actually make a comeback, and get wins that you shouldn’t have got… that has to bear well for the long term.  But again, we’re only 6 in.  Still, 4-2 is very good… and someone will almost be here to help improve upon that.

Meanwhile, I read that Kane may play in Game 1 vs Nashville.  Talk about some good news.  I won’t get into the Blackhawks too much; their series starts Wednesday night, and I will discuss at length then, but to see 88 possibly back in the lineup… that has to make everyone feel good.

It’s great to be back in the saddle… to be back in my city with my teams.  As I’ve talked about, this may be the best time of year.  I’ve been waiting, and now’s it here.  Now, I’m ready.
