April 13, 2015: Travel Day

You ever wonder how these guys do it?  Constantly on the road… travelling cross country sometimes to play a game.  Yeah, I know they’re getting millions to do it, and we’d trade places in a second, but… they’re still human.  A long travel day for me means I’m wiped out.

The packing, the transportation to the airport, the waiting at the airport, the flight, the unpacking, the jet lag, the checking into the hotel, then going to play a game on the biggest stage.  It can’t be easy.  Monday was my travel day, and it lasted from about 8am until 11pm.  That’s a whole day shot.  How do these guys do it?

Well, I’m sure the whole transportation back and forth, and the checking in is handled by other individuals.  They don’t have to worry about any of that; that’s a pretty big deal.  They still have to be on that flight, unless of course you’re like John Madden, and refuse to fly.  Or maybe B.A. Baracus, and have to be drugged to get on a plane.  That plane ride still takes its toll, especially one longer than a few hours.  You still don’t really feel 100% once you get off that plane.  Yeah, but these guys probably fly in the night before… or do they?

Let’s stop making excuses for these guys, and let’s stop talking about my trip already.  It’s over.  Yet, I recall in my betting days, the whole coast to coast thing was a major factor in games.  You know, that trip from New York to San Francisco… what’s that, about 6 hours, and then you’re expected to play a football game.  Yeah, Papa Vegas definitely takes that into account.  Or how about those back to back NBA games, or the back to back home and away NHL games, or the end of a home stand/beginning of a road trip for MLB games?  If you want an angle to a game, if you’re looking for a spot to make a bet, look at these things.  They have definitely came into play more than once… probably even more than I know.

And I’m supposed to still make my blog deadline for the day, after travelling all day?  Damn, it’s not easy, and yeah I may be a little late, but it’s still in.  I had to push myself to do it, but that’s what I do.  These guys have to push themselves too.  They have to overcome those disadvantages, and play through the circumstances, whatever they may be.  The good teams do that… the bad teams make excuses.

That constant time on the road, away from home, has to take a toll too, especially on guys with young families.  I know in searching for jobs on my own, the travel requirement must be minimum.  I can’t be on the road 50% of the time; there’s no way.  Then again, I’m not making $20 million per year… maybe I’d have to make an exception there.  You think?

I like my travel day to consist of a short drive or train ride… approximately 30 minutes.  Luckily, in my whole life, this has been true.  I don’t know what I’d do with a long commute, let alone being on the road half the time.  This is the requirement for the pro athletes.  They spend half their time on the road.  It has to wear on you, regardless of how much money you make… they’re still only human.

So when making your confidence picks, or on your next trip to Vegas, or maybe the next time you long onto your offshore betting account, take into account that travel day.  Anyone who travels occasionally knows it.  Anyone who does it for a living knows it.  That day is fun going to vacation, but not so much coming back.  Although you know what they say, home sweet home.  It’s great to see that skyline again…
