August 3, 2023: Waiting for Christmas Morning

Waiting for Christmas Morning? What am I, part of the Hallmark network running Christmas in July movies? It’s not even July any more… Although I love Christmas, there’s a time and a place, yes? No need to think about that now. Even when it comes closer, you still need to be patient. As a kid, I wanted to rip open my presents as soon as I saw some; I didn’t want to wait until Christmas morning… but I did. OK, where is this going? I’m applying this same patience that I have when waiting for Christmas to this unopened present that is the 2023 Chicago Bears football season. You get it?

The Bears have reported to camp and the excitement is building; heck, we just signed another guy I never heard of that is supposedly really good on the D-line… nice! There are reports coming from camp about Fields’ performance, the WRs having big days, the defense even doing their thing at times; it all sounds good. You see more and more national heads start to give the Bears their flowers too; I like to hear that, believe me, but… Let’s just wait until Christmas morning yeah? In this case, Week 1 vs the Packers.

Yeah, I’m going to exhibit this patience in the preseason too; you know I don’t pay attention to that, although now that I have my Draft Kings account… preseason football was typically a profitable time for me, that was usually all given back by about Week 4 of the regular season, but hey, how about those Browns on Thursday night beating the Jets, cashing my first NFL ticket of the year… yeah! OK, stay focused. Yes, our Bears, our boys that are going to take leaps and bounds towards the playoffs this year. Hey, I said it first OK? I DO think the Bears will be MUCH better this year, and when you hover around that 500 mark, all you need is a couple bounces, and you’re in the postseason, so… yeah, I believe it. But I’m going to wait… and see… I’m not going to crown anybody yet. This will all play out on the field starting Week 1, not in our heads, or based on what these TV personalities say about our boys, good or bad.

The Bears need to stick to business, and block all that shit out… even the good stuff. No need to get big heads when we’re coming off the NFL’s worst regular season last year; we haven’t won a damn thing yet… not one single game this year as far as I know. I know though, it’s hard not to be excited. Shit, we’re kind of starving over here. Besides the whole waiting 80+ years for a real QB and almost 40 years for another Super Bowl W… what else is there? Haha… We’re ready, more than ready. But… I’m going to try to keep it in.

The Cubs recent winning ways will help; I’m sure Sox fans are a lot more anxious to turn the page on baseball. If the Cubs keep it up, starting with a great measuring stick this weekend vs Atlanta, my Bears excitement will be bottled up for a bit longer… before I pop the cork off the champagne bottle Week 1 when we paste the Packers’ ass. Of course it has to be the Packers in Week 1, right? As if we’re not excited enough, we get to face our rivals WITHOUT a HOF QB for the first time in many fans’ lives. I’m older; I remember those days before then though… those were good days.

Let’s try to be patient. Let’s wait to open this present until the time comes. Let it happen naturally. Let’s not try to stick out our chests quite yet; hopefully there will be plenty of time for that. But yeah… excited about this upcoming Bears season? Just a little bit… Hope it really will feel like Christmas. Bear Down!!!
