July 31, 2023: Candy Man

Jeimer Candelario is back with the Cubs! Didn’t quite do me any favors with my Nationals bet last night against the Brewers when Jeimer was removed from the starting lineup, but I didn’t mind. I was hoping. I was hoping the Cubs were going to do more than just “not sell”; this was necessary. Is it enough? Probably not. But it’s more than we had, and for that, I’m a happy camper. Don’t stop now boys… The Cubs also acquired a reliever from the Royals I never heard of, which is fine. Buy, Buy, Buy! Who’s next?

Do you remember Jeimer’s first stint with the Cubs? Believe it or not, it was in 2016! Yeah, THAT year. He didn’t play much; he didn’t do well. He’s not on that list of names that’s on my 2016 World Series Champions glass cup that I drink out of either. Yeah, it was a cup of coffee. The following year he was moved to the Detroit Tigers; we got back Alex Avila and Justin Wilson… remember them? Jeimer did OK with the Tigers before being moved to the Nationals, and now, back to Wrigley. The Cubs gave up two guys I never heard of in DJ Herz and Kevin Made; maybe I should know who those guys are, but I don’t… I guess that’s a good thing?

Candy Man as he will be referred to from here on out has been having one of his best seasons in the bigs this year, which is the reason we traded for him. We need the help in the corner infield positions; I wonder how his defense is… Hopefully decent. I’d love to see him come in and make an immediate impact to this lineup. Nice timing too, with the Reds in Wrigley for 4 games, and the Braves to follow after.

The Cubs tried to come back on Monday night after falling down 6-1; the final score was 6-5. What the heck has happened to Stroman? Maybe the Cubs should have traded him? He was so good, and now, he’s been so bad. Will the real Marcus please stand up? If the Cubs want to do anything, we will need him to be the good Marcus. Maybe once the deadline officially passes at 5pm Tuesday, he can focus 100% on what he needs to do for us. Maybe…

I’d like to see the Cubs get some more pitching if possible. The bullpen feels like it’s been halfway decent, although another lefty never hurts. How about a starter? Tick tock… the deadline will be here before you know it.

I’m just glad we’re not selling, unless Jed has some tricks up his sleeve. I hope we’re buying some more, not only for THIS year, but for the next few years, setting us up to make some serious noise. Are the Cubs back yet? Maybe not quite, but it finally feels like we’re getting close. Let’s go Cubs!!!
