It’s that time of year… when I really start to zone in on baseball. I know every year is not the same, but lately, I’ve been really tuned into the MLB. Of course, I think the biggest driver has been the Cubs performance as of late; this never hurts. Any time the Cubs are playing well, baseball is better. But yeah, between betting on baseball, fantasy baseball, Quick Pitch every morning during the summer, and now the MLB Trade Deadline… bring it on.
I think it’s safe to say the Cubs are no longer sellers; looks like they just announced Bellinger is off the table. I’m happy about this development, but… am I truly convinced? First off, am I convinced THIS Cubs team can keep it up? I don’t think they can. I don’t think it’s enough for the Cubs just not to sell. They need to buy if they want to make a serious run this year. Adding a big bat and another starter… yeah, now we’re talking. Would that be enough? Well, it would be more than we have; that may be enough to get us in… to win it all? Whew… I don’t know. You see the Braves lately? What a juggernaut. Of course, you still have the Dodgers to contend with. Does anything put the Cubs on that tier? Probably not, but… it’s all about making the playoffs; you get in and things can happen, so yeah, I’d definitely be more hopeful. Standing pat though… maybe we don’t get in…
It’s clear where the Sox stand. Already shipping out Giolito, Lopez, Lynn, Kelly, and Graveman, the only question is “who’s next?”. It sucks for them. Saw folks on the MLB Network kind of making fun of them, projecting many trades. While probably true, and while it doesn’t exactly break my heart to see the Sox scuffle, I don’t like to see other people talking crap about them. What happens in Chicago stays in Chicago kind of thing. I can talk as much crap as I want about them, but outside people… back off. If I had a say on the South Side, I think pretty much anybody goes except Robert and Cease. I’d love to include Eloy in that group; he’s not a bad player when he’s healthy, but there in lies the rub. Liam Hendricks is solid, and with everything he’s been through, should hopefully be back with the club when he’s ready. I think the Sox were smart getting rid of Lynn; he’s done. Kelly, Graveman, Lopez… whatever. Giolito hurts, but man… he’s really faded huh? Been there done that… regardless of the circumstance, it sucks seeing your favorite guys go. Unfortunately, I imagine a few more Sox will be on the move in the next couple days.
What else on the deadline watch… Mad Max Scherzer is with the Rangers. The Angles acquired a couple more guys after the two from the Sox, since you know, they’re “going for it”… why wouldn’t they? Shohei is absolutely ridiculous, and if Trout comes back soon… still, tough division they’re in. Talking about Verlander being on the move next; he just recorded his 250th career win on Sunday, which makes him the closest guy to the 300 win club. Still, another 4 years for Justin? Maybe not. Time to sit back and watch the moves fly. It’s not quite as crazy as the NBA deadline, but the MLB deadline is fun. Hoping to see somebody new in a Cubs uni soon…
