July 23, 2023: Bird Hunting

posted in: Cubs | 0

Unfortunately, I didn’t get to watch too much baseball this weekend; of course, I was keeping an eye on things, even a little closer than normal, because, you know… the Cardinals were in town. It didn’t start off too well, losing on Thursday at Wrigley to open the 4 game set, but after that, it was bird hunting time; the Cubs won 3 straight against the pitiful ass Cardinals. The Cubs now sit 3 games under 500 and 6.5 games out of first place in the NL Central, a little more than a week before the MLB trade deadline.

Speaking about the trade deadline… did you see that the Cardinals are supposedly shopping Willson Contreras?!?! You know, I look at all our boys scattered throughout the league, the guys who brought the Holy Grail to Cubs fans. None of them are doing that great. I wonder… how would they be doing if they were still here? I think… they would be doing better. Will we ever see any of those guys in a Cubs uniform again? A lot of times I’m of the opinion that the ship has sailed; no need for them to return. Yet, in this instance… I can’t help but let my imagination run wild, and think about reuniting them, and watch them lead us back into the postseason; it’s fun to dream. But yeah, the Cards already shopping Willson… that’s something huh? So much for the “better organization”; grass isn’t always greener I guess…

As far as the Cubs talent that will be on the market, there aren’t many hitters hotter right now than Cody Bellinger. I guess I have to admit I was wrong about him. I classified his signing as a retread pickup of a guy past his prime by a team operating like a small market club. Now, he’s out there killing it, and of course, is the subject of many trade rumors; this is what the plan was right? Everybody still believes the Cubs will be sellers; the rebuild is still in its early stages. Then I looked at his age… only 28 years old; I thought he was older. I think, can he be part of this rebuild, and be there when the Cubs will be good again? I think, can the Cubs, if they decide to buy, be good again NOW?

The NL Central is up for grabs. The no-name Brewers, the surprising Reds, the underperforming Cardinals, and the… Pirates don’t exactly strike any fear in you. It SHOULD be the Cubs division to win… every year… a lot of things SHOULD be though. With so much talk about the Cubs selling, who would they get if they were to be buyers? I’m not saying I think they will be buyers, I’m just saying. Another starting pitcher would make sense. A slugging 1B or 3B guy sounds nice. Who would we give up? I’d much rather have this type of conversation than the when that’s being talked about.

In the meantime, let’s just enjoy beating the shit out of the Cardinals. 3 out of 4 is always sweet, but is especially sweet because it’s those bastards. I’m happy right now; let me at least enjoy these next 7 days before it all goes to shit again. Go Cubs!
