The Bulls roster is taking shape. After the signings of Carter and Craig, and resigning of Coby White, I thought the writing was on the wall; I thought Ayo Dosunmu would be gone. Glad I was wrong. He isn’t a make or break type player, but he is a very nice piece. He’s that type of player you need on a championship team… guy that comes off the bench, can handle the rock, moves the ball around, plays good D… problem is, the Bulls aren’t a championship team. Does that mean we shouldn’t have signed him?
I’m glad we signed him. Ayo for three years/21 million seems a little steep, but… there are tons of guys getting paid tons of money… money that they don’t really deserve, but… more power to them. The NBA is in very good shape financially; the players are cashing in as well. Can’t wait for my son’s first contract… haha. But yeah, maybe we paid a little bit more for Ayo than we should have, but… we know him, and obviously, we like him. In this particular instance, I am in agreement with the Bulls front office. Like I wrote earlier, the pieces the Bulls have been putting together are nice. I like the Jevon Carter signing; I like that we signed a three point shooter in Torrey Craig. I’m happy we kept Coby; same with Ayo. Even the Vooch signing… we know who he is, and if we’re expecting him to be that 3rd star, I think that’s reasonable. Why am I happy with this if the last thing I wanted to do was run it back again?
The problem remains with the star power at the top of the roster: DeRozan and Lavine. In his first year, DeRozan was everything and more; he carried us as times. Last year, not so much. This year… well, will it be more like his first year with us or his second? Or, will his 3rd year be another decline? I’m worried about it. I like DD, but… if he can’t be that #1 guy… He wasn’t brought into be the #1 guy, but he was in his first year; when he wasn’t last year, that means we didn’t have a #1… this is because Zach hasn’t filled that role… yet. The #1 guy was reserved for Zach. I don’t know how long restaurants typically wait for you to show up for your reservation, but… how long will the Bulls wait for Zach to be THAT guy? I don’t think he will ever be that guy; I hope I’m wrong. If I am right though, then we don’t have a #1 going into next year; this is the problem.
Look, I’d love to sit here and tell you that Patrick Williams will make the jump into a top 3 star on this team… and maybe since we don’t have a true #1, two #2s and two #3s will make up for it… that, plus the nice pieces on the roster which gives us depth will kick in, and the Bulls will make a push towards the top of the East…. I’d love to sit here and say that… I’d love to sell you my 2010 Nissan Altima for 50K too.
Welcome back Ayo; glad to have you home for at least another 3 years. Hopefully in this timeframe, the top of the roster will take shape, and the Bulls CAN make a push up the ladder. As for the 2023-2024 season… let’s just say I’m not as excited as I am about the Bears and Blackhawks, but… I’ll try to remain hopeful. Go Bulls!
