How was your 4th of July? Mine was pretty good. Got to see a ton of fireworks, watched a parade, saw an old friend, and watched my son light some fireworks for the first time. The only bad thing is that I have to work the rest of the week… oh well.
It’s funny how fireworks are illegal in Illinois; you could never tell, let me tell you. Shit was popping all over Chicago, just like always; actually, it didn’t really last too late, which was nice, although I don’t think it would have impacted my sleep at all… not much does. The bang bang of fireworks echoed throughout the night; the smell of sulfur filled the air. Hopefully not many people ended up in ER due to the celebration; we made it through another year. Thankfully, there were no “rogue” fireworks, like the one that ended up in my aunt’s lawn chair the one year growing up. We would have a friendly competition with the neighbors on each side; I forget what stories I shared already in this here blog. Anyways, one spinner went out of control, landing right where my aunt was sitting not 5 minutes earlier; that would have been problematic. There was the pack of firecrackers that instantly went off when I lighted them in a paint can when I was young; I thought I had lost my hearing. Some days I think that wouldn’t be so bad… haha.
Two of the Chicago teams were in action on the 4th. The Cubs winning in extra innings in Milwaukee, and the Sox losing at home against Toronto. Chicago baseball marches on; when will the next big bang happen for our baseball clubs? All Star week is up next. Congrats to Luis Robert, Justin Steele, Marcus Stroman, and Dansby Swanson for making the team, and apologies to Nico who will be there soon IMO. But the trade deadline on August 1st may be the date of that next BOOM. Certainly feel like the teams will be active, maybe not in the way you or I want them to be, but… at the very least, do something, because what we have today, ain’t doing it.
The other Chicago teams NOT in action were the Bears, Blackhawks, and Bulls. The Bears and Blackhawks have already set off their big spark. Super excited about both of those upcoming seasons. The Bulls on the other hand, well, I like the small moves they’ve made, but still waiting/hoping for a big trade; in case I haven’t mentioned it 100x already, rather head into this next season without Zach. Certainly participating in a big trade would be that loud bang for Los Toros.
Our teams can’t always set off the big firework show, but why not? I expect the Chicago teams to always be in a position to be competitive; too much? Probably. Although 2016 is only 7 years ago, it’s time for another title here in this city. Over/Under on the number of years until that happens? Let’s just say I don’t want to go 10 years without one. Everybody is on the clock. Make it happen. Happy 4th!
