Do you ever get a response back to a “what’s up”, or a “how’s it going”, with a “can’t call it”? I have; I’m trying to remember from who. It was like their calling card. I love slang; all those words and sayings we used to have growing up… I miss that. Now we have to talk like adults, and use proper English… haha. Well, at least I have the new, up and coming slang from my son nowadays; “capping” is one of my favorites. But for today’s purpose, the 2023 NBA Finals preview… I truly, can’t call it… no cap.
It feels like everybody thinks the Nuggets are going to take it, rather easily; that’s never a good thing, but… it’s understandable: Denver is a very good team. In fact, they are the #1 seed in the West; for dispatching LBJ and the Fake Show in sweeping fashion, they have a place in my heart too. That sweep has allowed them to rest up too, which can never be a bad thing this time of year, right? Well… will there be rust is my question. Will it take them a minute to get going? Will this minute be a quarter, a half… a game? It’s for this very reason that I like the Heat in Game 1. The Heat, coming off a crazy ass series, winning just a couple nights ago in Game 7, are already on that level. Not saying the Nuggets won’t be or can’t be, I’m just saying it may take a minute. So, if the Heat sneak out Game 1 in Denver, does that change your opinion on the series? Like I said, can’t call it.
The nice thing is, there is no wrong call in this series. I like the Nuggets; I always like seeing a team get their first ever championship. I like their players Joker, Murray, Porter… not a huge fan of Gordon necessarily or their coach, but… overall, very likeable, plus the fact that I mentioned above. On the other side, the Heat have Jimmy; enough said. I think I’ve talked about him plenty, you know, how I hated when we traded him, how I’m so thrilled to have Zach now instead, how although it is bittersweet to see him doing so well, it is overall… sweet… acceptable. I wouldn’t mind for one second to see Buckets get a ring; bravo Jimmy for your success to this point. Will Jimmy G Buckets lead his squad to a title in another underdog role?
The other guy on the Heat, Bam Bam… how he matches up against Joker will be key. In my opinion, which is certainly not as valid as Spoelstra’s, I would let Joker do his damage; don’t double team him. Let him score 50. It’s when he gets others involved, when that Nuggets offense really starts to roll; same with Murray. Play solid, straight up defense; let their stars be the stars… don’t let any of their other guys get off. I think that could work. Is Tyler Herro coming back btw? That would be a nice boost for the Heat…
So I’m going to call it anyways; guess I was capping. Before the playoffs started, did you think the Nuggets were better than the Bucks and/or Celtics? I didn’t. I would have picked either of them over the Nuggets had they made it this far, but they didn’t… thanks to the team that did, the Miami Heat. They’ve played “uphill” all postseason, even in that play-in game against our Bulls where they were down late; they’ve beat the odds to get here. Can they do it one more time? I’m leaning to saying… no, but… I think this is going to be one hell of a series. My pick: Nuggets in 7.
