May 28, 2023: Chicago Baseball

You know, with 2 teams playing in this city, our chances to have a good baseball team are 2x better than most other cities, with the exception of New York and LA. The Cubs are entering their 154th season, while the Sox are entering their 123rd season. Now tell me how in 277 combined seasons we only have 6 total World Series championships between the two??? Yes, that’s right… 3 titles each. Like it or not, the Cubs and the Sox are not a whole lot different from each other. They both play in Chicago, and for the most part, they have both sucked. And now, in 2023, the Cubs and the Sox are keeping the good times rolling…

The Sox are the 3rd worst team in the AL; the Cubs are neck and neck for the same or worse in the NL. Surprised? Well, I’m not surprised by the Cubs. Yes, the hot start got me curious; I was almost on the brink of buying it, but… the month of May has had a lot more Ls than Ws for our Cubbies. Like I said, I’m not surprised by that. When you use all your cap space on 1 good signing and a bunch of retreads, what do you expect? As for the South Side, yeah, I guess I am surprised. This was supposed to be another year of the “window” for the Sox, which by the way, has yielded jack shit so far. Now, it looks like something drastic will have to be done, which will essentially close that window, and put them in the queue to open another one in a few years. Fun times.

Which team would you rather be? Well, the Sox have a much more talented roster, but that paper stuff… you know, doesn’t always pan out. The Cubs “rebuild” is still in its early stages; there are a few good guys around. The worst thing about this is that the divisions that they both play in suck; they are there for the taking!!! In the Sox case, it’s underperforming at its finest. In the Cubs case, it’s a decision to hold back resources until “the time is right”. In both cases, it’s bullshit. Would you believe me if I told you the Sox are spending more on their payroll than the Cubs this year? Believe it. It’s only by 3M, but… it’s embarrassing, if you’re a Cubs fan, like I am. At least the Sox are trying to ante up… rarely do you see their payroll up there. It’s just too bad they got a bunch of lemons… the Cubs meanwhile are running expired fruit out there.

It’s beyond frustrating, let me tell you. I love baseball. I love going to games, even a Sox game here and there. Yet, Chicago has to rank among the most disappointing cities in baseball, maybe ever. Yes, 2016 did happen; thank God!!! And yes, for our Sox brethren, 2005 did happen. So yeah, most of us have seen it in our lifetimes, which is a big plus. Is it too much to ask to do it again this century? Well, it certainly feels like it’s “wait until next year” time again… maybe both teams should adopt that motto… BOOOOO!!!!
