April 30, 2023: Rain Rain Go Away

This was supposed to be the opening weekend for my son’s baseball team; we were both excited. He was slated to pitch in the opener on Saturday, but Mother Nature had other plans. As we pulled up to the field, the game before ours was still going on; promise! However, the rain would not stop; the forecast called for rain for the next couple hours. Not so great. Yes, the game would be called slightly before the 1pm start time; damn. It’ll have to wait until Sunday, when our 2nd game was scheduled.

Did you see what happened in the Sox game the other night? I believe Lance Lynn had a no-hitter going into the 6th inning; the Sox were winning 3-0. He lost the no-hitter, and the Sox bullpen eventually blew the game… in spectacular fashion. 12-3 was the final; holy shit! That loss locked in an opening month of futility for the White Sox, who would go the entire month of April 2023 without a series victory; when the heck has that happened? They finally won a game on Sunday, bringing their record in the past 10 games to 1-9, bringing their record for 2023 to 8-21. Again, holy shit! What the heck is happening on the South Side?

The Cubs had a weekend to forget as well. The Cubs had surprised me, starting off the season pretty well; I didn’t expect it. I like unexpected good surprises. Well, hold the phone Jed. The Cubs go down to Florida and get swept; it has to be the Marlins… those bastards. The Cubs remain one game above 500 at 14-13 heading into the month of May. If the Cubs could finish ahead of 500 in every month, I think the season would be a smashing success. I’m not holding my breath though. Hey, maybe I’ll be nicely surprised…

As Sunday afternoon rolled around, I just knew we were going to play our first game. Yet, on the drive to the park, here came the rain again. Just as Saturday, the game before ours was still going on; unlike Saturday, our game started as scheduled, but only lasted one inning. My son pitched in that one inning, that rainy, cold, muddy inning; he was not too happy about it. He ended up hitting 3 kids, walking a bunch more, but he did get through the inning; only one kid hit the ball hard off of him the whole inning. I told him as he came off the field: that will be the toughest inning you pitch all year. It was his first inning of the season, from a new mound distance, in a steady rain, about 40 degrees, and a muddy mound; they called the game soon after he walked off the mound.

So this weekend was a baseball bust; rain rain go away. And how about the month of April go away for the Sox? Can’t get any worse. And the Marlins go away for the Cubs? Nationals are up next. I guess here in Chicago, we’re not quite ready for this baseball season. As the calendar is about to turn to May, we’ll be there soon. Can’t wait.
