April 4, 2023: Draft Crazy

posted in: Bears | 0

We’re about 3 weeks away from what could be one of the biggest drafts in Bears history. Am I overstating this? We finally have a QB, or at the very least, one we’re going to run with for a while (hopefully he doesn’t have to run too much). We bottomed out last year earning the #1 pick in the draft. We traded the pick for a haul, adding to our already pile of picks we had AND our ton of cap space. In today’s NFL, where teams make the jump from nothings to something overnight, the Bears are positioned to be THAT team, IF they can execute on this draft.

The first pick, as of today, is the #9 overall. There are rumors that the Bears will trade down again, and add to that pile of 10 picks; yes, they have 10 picks to make this year. I don’t think they’ll do it. The way this pre-draft stuff has been going, it is working out great for the Bears. There are now rumors that the top 4 picks will be QBs! If that is the case, that just means the other good players will be bumped down the list. If the top 4 picks are QBs, the Bears will get a top 5 player in their draft pool at #9; great value. The big question mark is Jalen Carter. This guy was the slam dunk first overall pick of the draft not too long ago. His accident, his performance at the combine, have put a big question mark on him. So, the question is, if Jalen Carter is available at #9, do we scoop him? If he’s there, and the Bears take him, you’re saying we got the previously slotted overall #1 pick at #9? Talk about value… Carter is in an area of need for the Bears; we have a lot of needs. I would lean towards the OL being the biggest need, and the fact that we may grab a top tackle that will protect Fields for the next decade is VERY attractive, yet… I don’t think I’d be mad at the Carter pick. Rushing and protecting the QB are top two; if Carter is gone, then I think the pick becomes easier. Peter Skoronski, Paris Johnson Jr, Broderick Jones, and Darnell Wright are all very highly rated OTs. With that many available, maybe the Bears DO trade back, unless they’re really zoned in on one of these guys. I couldn’t tell you which one they should take, but they should get one of them.

The Bears will then have 5 picks in the following 3 rounds. We’re going to get some really good football players. The possibility of picking a bust will always be there; Poles won’t be perfect. But, between the first round pick, if we can get 3 other guys out of those 5 picks that will contribute significantly next year, I’d say we were doing pretty well. If we can hit on all of them??? Exciting times right now; I can’t wait for the draft. I’m typically into the first round, but this year, maybe I clear the calendar to watch the whole draft… haha. That ain’t going to happen, but I will be following closely. We’ve still got some time… more to come. Bear Down!!!
