Saturday was the first of my son’s birthday parties. We wanted to do something for his schoolmates. Some of the other boys and girls in his class have outings and such for their birthdays; my son has never had one. So… we decided to change that this year; my wife had a great idea. We rented the gym by our house and invited his entire class; family will be next weekend. This was only for the boys and girls in his 5th grade class; it was a good turn out. We ordered some pizzas and had some cupcakes; the kids had a blast. My son enjoyed it most importantly; they probably could have been playing all night.
I love that the girls brought a volleyball to play with. The girls play basketball too, but sounded like their preference was volleyball. They played on one half of the court, while the boys played half court… that is, until the rest of them showed up; then they ran it full court, avoiding the girls hitting the volleyball around as they headed that direction. I got to shoot around a little bit before everybody got there; I still love to play basketball myself. Playing out there with my son is a lot of fun, but when the boys started showing up, Dad drifted into the background, playing DJ for the music we were blasting in the gym. Sure, Dad wants to play, but… it’s his time, plus I wasn’t really interested in running up and down the court either… haha.
After the cupcakes, there was some half-court stuff going on, so I finally jumped in there. The kids were whining about how it wasn’t fair; I think my son was the loudest… haha. Yeah, nobody could guard me down low obviously, but these kids can play. My son got me twice from long distance, one of his other buddies got me once, and yet another two both got me once. I wasn’t going 100%, but I did block a couple shots and steal a ball or two. But yeah, his class, the 13-0 team during the year, will be dangerous going forward. As long as they play together, they will be a tough out. I saw some of the kids play better on this day than I ever saw them play during the season; that’s a very good sign.
Yeah, I guess those days when my son wants to play with Dad are winding down? I think I still have some time, and I do have him all to myself at home, so… that’s good. My wife even put up a couple shots in the gym for this one; I’d love to block her shot… haha. We played racquetball together before, shit, way back in the day; she wasn’t too happy when I beat her. I guess my son gets his competitiveness from BOTH of us; nothing wrong with that. I just can’t believe he’s about to turn 11… holy shit! I remember holding him on my forearm, in a flying position, patting his back, trying to burp him. And now, he’s trying to cross me up and sink a 3 pointer in my face… these years are flying by…
