With the changing of seasons, as we stand on the brink of the start of baseball, we know what comes with it: fantasy baseball! Yeah, I still manage a fantasy baseball team; my team… the Curse Busters. I’ve already “broke my curse”, winning 4 fantasy baseball titles; thankfully, the team I named my team after broke their curse back in 2016. Maybe it’s time to change my team name? Nah… if it ain’t broke…
Before getting to bid time, we had to find another guy; we found one! Thanks Robby! Ok, now we’re set. 10 team auction league locked and loaded. Let the good times roll.
I’ve been happy with my drafts before; there have been a handful of years when I was unhappy with it. You have to be flexible; you can’t get hung up too much on a guy or guys… although if you really want him… After I finished this year’s draft, honestly, I can’t remember being more happier with how it turned out. Literally every guy that is on my team was on my list. I didn’t get everybody on my list, but every, single, guy I have on my team, I identified before the draft. Yes sir!
I wanted to get 2 big offensive names and 3 big starting pitchers. Mookie at $47 was my biggest expenditure on the evening; my 2 in the 1-2 punch on offense was Pete Alonso at a cool $33. Not only did I want both of these guys, I wanted to spend a total of $80 on my big two… right on the button! For my pitchers, I planned to get 3 studs for $100. My number one target was Alcantara; got him for $32. My number two target was Aaron Nola; got him for $25. My third target was Shane Bieber; didn’t get him. My fourth target was Luis Castillo; got him for $19. $76 for my top 3 pitchers; I’m already ahead of my budget. Yes!
I had some guys in the middle rounds that I really, really wanted. Enter Kris Bryant; I got him for $19. Enter Gunnar Henderson; I got him for $14. And finally, my numero uno catcher that I would not be denied… Adley Rutschman… overpaying for him at $20; that savings on my top 3 pitchers came in handy. From there, I didn’t spend double digits on another player. Jeremy Pena, Sean Murphy, Brandon Nimmo, Jake Cronenworth, Ty France, Anthony Rendon, Joey Meneses, Luis Arraez, Jarred Kelenic, Adam Frazier, and Lane Thomas round out the batters. Logan Webb, Logan Gilbert, Pablo Lopez, MacKenzie Gore, Kyle Bradish, Cole Irvin, and Hayden Wesneski, round out the starters. A combined $4 for my closers David Bednar and Jose LeClerc rounded out my squad. Like I said, I couldn’t be happier.
I printed out some info and started reading stuff on Tuesday. 2 days later, I was ready to go; I felt really prepared. This stuff is old hat for me; I know baseball… I know fantasy baseball… I know auction drafts. Things don’t always fall into place like they did in this draft, but when they do… man, it feels good. Let’s see how it translates in the standings; looking good on paper is only half the battle. Good luck to all!
