I was feeling really good about the Bears. The haul for the #1 pick, the free agent pickups, all the picks to use in the upcoming draft, more free agent pickups (?)… Then I got the news last night about David Montgomery; he will NOT be returning. Not only will he not be returning, he’ll be going to a division foe. Yes, we’ll be seeing him twice a year as a Detroit Lion; hey, at least he’s not a Packer…
I don’t get it really. Sure, I wanted Monty back, but that doesn’t matter. The Bears said they wanted him back; Monty said he wanted to be back. So??? The contract was 3 years/18 million… total. So $6M per year, and we couldn’t do that??? Obviously somebody was full of shit. I really like Khalil Herbert, and I’m not opposed to going after Jamaal Williams, who in all likelihood will not be back in Detroit because of this signing; I’m even up to going after Austin Ekeler from the Chargers, who supposedly wants out. We certainly have some options. Even if Herbert goes in as the lead back, and we draft a RB later on… I liked Montgomery. He ran hard. There were times he was trying to beat 3 or 4 guys, by himself! Sure, he wasn’t the greatest pass catcher; he seemed to be a pretty good pass protector. But yeah, he seemed to give it his all; what more can you ask for from a guy? Yes, he didn’t have breakaway speed… I’m guessing the Bears didn’t really want him back, because it wasn’t like David got paid a king’s ransom over there. That’s fine; I don’t agree, but that’s OK.
The subtraction of Roquan Smith and David Montgomery has been the most painful part of this process thus far. Here were guys who could play some ball. They’re both 25 years old. Sure, Roquan is making a lot of money, but David was certainly affordable. Still, we’ll need to continue to trust in Ryan Poles; certainly there are enough good things happening that offset these departures. We’re expecting many more things to come too, like kicking ass in this upcoming draft. We’re not going to agree on every move, and if Montgomery, like Roquan, went to an AFC team… OK. The fact that we’ll see him twice a year, makes this a lot worse.
The Lions are up and coming. Yes, they ARE the Lions, but maybe, just maybe, they finally got something going. To see David go over there and help them out, especially against us… I’m sure he’ll be out for blood when we play. I’m not even opposed to Detroit winning a Super Bowl at some point, just because they never won one; if Monty is there for that, I guess I’ll be OK… good for him! Obviously seeing another one in Chicago is far and away the most important, but if it’s not us… the Lions did eliminate the Packers last year when they had nothing to play for… they did carve out a small place in my heart because of that. I’d still rather have Montgomery in the AFC… oh well.
What’s next? The news has been fast and furious for our Bears. Will we sign another free agent? Supposedly we’re signing some backup Eagles RB? More trenches, more trenches!!! And yeah, the draft next month. Stay tuned. The building of the foundation of a Super Bowl team is in progress; I just wish Roquan and Monty were part of it. I’ll be OK though; keep the GOOD news coming Poles. Bear Down!!!
