March 10, 2023: The Haul

Almost there… I made it this far, to Friday, March 10, 2023; hopefully this is a day we will look back at and remember, remember the day when the Bears got the haul for the number one overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft.

I was out and about; the text messages slowly started rolling in. The Bears traded the pick! I was excited, and a bit nervous; I had my wife check her phone for the return. She started to read what we got back, then kept going, and going; each item she mentioned, I got more and more excited. Now I didn’t have a magic amount I wanted in return for our Ace, but I did know I wanted a lot; the Bears got a lot. Honestly, I couldn’t be more happier.

First off, we’re moving down 8 picks in this year’s draft; not too shabby at all. Still a top 10 pick! We also got a 2nd round pick this year; good start. We then got a 1st round next year AND a 2nd round pick the following year; really, really good stash of picks back, but wait, there’s more. We also got DJ Moore! Holy shit! I can’t believe it. All these years of watching the Bears make trades that feel like we’ve been ripped off… finally, finally. We fleeced someone. We absolutely got the most bang for our buck for the #1 pick which was earned by tank-a-palooza 2022-2023. It was all worth it… it was all worth it.

Of course, now that the deed is done, we need to make the right picks. Now that I know what picks we’ll have (maybe… more trades to come?), now I can zero in on someone I want. I’m guessing at that spot we can get a pretty fricking good offensive lineman; if not, someone who can rush the passer either from the DL or LB position. I think we should focus a lot on the trenches, and of course, protecting our guy Fields. Of course, I want more offensive weapons, but with the addition of Moore, we’re already light years ahead of last year.

He immediately becomes our #1 WR; that wasn’t that hard to do, but I really do like this guy. I liked Claypool too, but he sucked when we got him. BTW, I’m giving Chase a mulligan for last year, for multiple reasons; I really do think he can successfully fill that WR2 position on our squad. That leaves Mooney at WR3; I can’t tell you how much more I love Mooney at WR3 then WR1. So a decent starting WR core? WTF… this is weird.

As I responded to each of the texts, I expressed my happiness with what just went down. The more I thought about the haul we just got, the more excited I got. We will not be in this position very often, hopefully never again; we needed to take full advantage. I really think we did. Of course, this is only part of the plan, but it was a big part. As the draft approaches, as free agency opens up, the Bears have more important steps to take to improve this roster; no doubt about that. However, I will remember March 10th 2023… I hope to look back on that day and say how important it was in helping the Bears win multiple (yeah, more than one!) Super Bowl titles. More, much more to come… Bear Down!!!
