I see him. I’ve been hearing the things he’s been saying. I was pissed when the Cubs didn’t resign him; I hoped he wouldn’t end up turning to the dark side… But yes, Willson Contreras is now a St. Louis Cardinal, and… he seems pretty happy about it, already stating it’s better over there than it was with the Cubs. Well, that was quick…
I love Willson Contreras; how can you not? He was a part of the 2016 World Series Championship team; anybody that played with that team will be in our hearts forever. Is it his fault that the Cubs didn’t want to pay him his money? Is is his fault that he was just the latest star player that the Cubs chose not to extend? You know, we did it to ourselves. It’s not like we can say… OK, we’re not going to keep you, but please don’t go to THIS team; I couldn’t imagine a worse landing spot for Willy… or maybe I mean for us. As Cub fans, this one is going to hurt, and it seems like Willson doesn’t mind pouring a little salt in our fresh wounds; that shit ain’t cool. Because just like it’s not his fault that the Cubs didn’t keep him, it’s not OUR fault that they didn’t keep him either. We wanted him; he does realize that right? But you know Willy… he plays with a passion, and is not afraid to stir the pot; we loved him for that. But now, with the organization that thinks their shit don’t stink, that plays for the “best fans in baseball”… we know that’s a load of shit…. Contreras is slowing becoming Public Enemy #1… this really sucks.
I’m trying to think of a comparison, either with the Cubs or in Chicago sports in general. Sure, the Cubs have made their fair share of screw-ups; I mean, you can throw out Lou Brock’s name… that’d work. Things would have certainly been a lot worse had Greg Maddux ended up signing with the Cardinals; still sucked to see him doing his HOF thing in another team’s jersey. Recent departures of Rizzo, KB, and Baez haven’t exactly come back to haunt us… yet. Fowler and Lester both ended up in St. Louis for a few; that sucked to see, but didn’t really hurt that bad. Not worried about JHey’s new swing in LA… But Willson??? This one is really scary.
There were a couple Bears that ended up in Green Bay; McMahon and McMichael for starters. I hated seeing Wilbur go to Washington back in the day. Trying to think of more recent Bears examples… Chelios did end up with the Red Wings; that wasn’t fun. There are a few ex-Bulls guys out there doing well today. You can’t expect something like this to never happen, but an ex-Chicago Cub World Series champion, a really good player with years left, ending up on our hated rivals???
How would we like Willson to act? Well, for starters, don’t put the balls of the Cards organization in your mouth and you haven’t even played one regular season game yet. Certainly don’t worship Molina, the most overrated catcher of all time. I know you’re hurt… the Cubs did you wrong; we don’t disagree. I wished the best for you… just not in St. Louis. For some reason, I foresee a Hate File for Contreras at some point, because I know he’s going to want to really kick our ass, but… for now, I’m going to try to be patient as Willy works out his feelings. Maybe he’ll do well, but the Cardinals will suck; maybe he’ll struggle specifically against us when we play him. I certainly don’t want to see him circling the bases at Wrigley, and definitely don’t want to see him raise another World Series trophy as long as he has THAT uniform on. This is going to be fun… NOT!
