February 22, 2023: Back At It

For all intensive purposes, Tuesday night was the start of baseball season. Was hoping to get my son into the spring/summer league at the same park we played fall baseball; it happened. Was hoping to get a chance to coach again; it happened. And now, the first coach’s meeting of the year… back at it…

I love coaching. I am happy to be getting another chance; figure I have a few years left, so might as well take advantage of it. My son will be playing in an 11-12 year old league; he’ll be one of the youngest in the league because of where his birthday falls. This should be OK. My son knows what he’s doing. Got him a new glove this year. His old “Target” glove was falling apart; finally invested in a good glove for the kid… good God it’s a lot of money. After some breaking in by the glove professional (my dad), he’ll be ready to give the new mitt a shot. Going to have to get him a new bat too. Got the news that this league is wooden bats ONLY; that piece of news may have just saved me a couple hundred dollars. Even the price of the nicest wooden bat should come under the price of a decent aluminum bat. I’m glad they’re going wooden bats only; take it back to the old school…

This league that we’re about to start in, is legit; they know what the hell they’re doing. They’re organized, and from first impression, passionate about the game of baseball, and teaching it to the kids; right up my alley. There’ll be 16 teams in our division with over 200 kids; I can’t wait. I think I may have to step my game up this year… maybe look for a couple new drills; who knows. I do know that it’s all about practice; taking grounders, taking some hacks, getting out there and playing the game… that’s the best way to learn. I’ll be partnered up with a coach I’ve done this with a few times; it should be fun.

The draft is next; I have no idea who these kids are. Going to lean on my other coach, because his son goes to school with some of them… maybe get a little intel. Luckily for me I have a lot of experience with drafts, with fantasy football and baseball, so I know how it’s going to go, but… it will still be a challenge trying to select the right kids. We all have information on each of them to look at, but I haven’t seen any of them play, so… good luck to me.

I do know who my kid is, and the fact that I’ll be coaching him again is the most important. Coaching him, like my dad used to coach me, is a really big part of it. Of course, seeing how good the kids get from day 1 to the end of the season is pretty sweet, plus, since I’ll be going to each of my son’s games, it makes no sense for me just to sit there and bitch about the coaches, so… here we are. Ready for baseball season to begin; now we just wait for the weather to cooperate… oh yeah, our team name… the Phillies. The Cubs were gone, so… I’m good with it. Play Ball!!!
