February 11, 2023: Basketball IQ

The Bulls played a great 3 quarters on Saturday night in Cleveland vs the Cavs, unfortunately, there are 4 quarters; stop me if you’ve heard this before. The Cavs came out and stomped us in the final frame, leading to another Bulls loss; winning early, losing late. Stop me if you’ve heard this before. The two words that best describe this Bulls team are “wildly inconsistent”. The fact of the matter is, you cannot trust this team. They’ve shown us how good they can be, but more often, they showed us how bad they can be. This season feels like it’s starting to spin down the toilet…

OK, let me pump the brakes a minute; the Bulls would actually be in the playoffs if they started today. Thankfully, the NBA extended it to 10 teams, which I don’t like btw, but that is the only thing saving this jerk of a 10 seed. At 26-30, although the playoffs are still very much possible, the Bulls certainly do not seem primed to take that next step. We have 26 more games that will finish the regular season chapter; let’s at least hope there IS another chapter, even though it may only be one page long.

Let’s start with our go-to punching bag of a player, Zach Lavine. My go-to line lately is how Zach’s basketball IQ is equal to that of a grapefruit. Someone please tell me a more frustrating Bulls player than Zach; I can’t think of one. Well, I guess you can throw Patrick Williams in that conversation; if you want, sticking with the theme, you can throw this whole team in that convo. But yeah, Zach… we already know about his end of the game decision making, but this has just spread like wild fire throughout the entire game. Sure, just like this team, he has flashes… flashes of what could, should be for our max man. Far too often, Zach is playing shoddy defense, throwing the ball away, yelling for foul calls that aren’t there, taking treys that only Curry should be taking, or driving to within feet of the bucket only to throw it out to the 3 point line. Pick your poison. He’s just not a very smart player; there’s really no way around that statement. Oh yeah, he’s added missing free throws to that list; wtf?!?! I will always hold out hope for Zach as long as he wears a Bulls uni, but honestly, that belief is dwindling. I don’t know… maybe 20% possibility at this point; maybe that’s too low, maybe that’s generous. I got excited about the prospect of trading him… I guess nothing says it better than that.

But the Bulls are my team, and Zach is on my team, and regardless of how frustrating him, and they are, I’ll be sitting here rooting for them. It’s tough being a die hard fan; there’s no way out for us… no other team’s bandwagon to hook our trailer to. The only way out is via that remote control; turn it off… don’t watch it. Well, like a car accident, I couldn’t turn away late in the 4th quarter; I had to see it out…. and yeah, it was a familiar ending. Are we too far along to change things up? Can the Bulls get this thing going in the right direction? Can they make a move up the standings? There’s always next game, until there ain’t. Monday night vs the Magic in the UC is our next chance. Go Bulls!
