January 26th is a day that we will always remember. In Chicago, if you were alive back in 1986, you saw the greatest single year team in NFL history; you saw the Bears stomp the Patriots 46-10. I was 9 years old at the time, and let me tell you, I remember it well.
I’ve wrote about it, extensively. There’s a whole feature on it on my website for God’s sake. Interested? Here you go; go here: https://www.thelocalsportstalk.com/features-2/1985-bears/ Anyways, yeah, they were something. Of course, they have been our ONLY Super Bowl team; we did have Lovie and Urlacher and Hester and… Grossman, but they came up short; do I have a Hate File for Peyton Manning? Losing in the Super Bowl is brutal; I can’t even imagine losing all those times like the Bills. Hey, at least they won’t lose in the Super Bowl this year… But winning the big game? Not a whole lot of things better than that my friends. I feel bad for all my fellow brethren in Chicago who haven’t seen a Super Bowl win yet; that’s rough. For all those who haven’t seen one, just know we had THIS one; read up on it, watch some highlights, see why the 85 Bears are in everyone’s conversation about greatest team ever. The Bears were kings of the NFL once upon a time. For all those who were alive, you know what I’m talking about, yet… there are some of us who get tired of talking about this great team; I’ll never understand that. Look, I know… you can’t live in the past, but… you can always remember. It DID happen; we’re not making it up. They WERE the best ever; sure, you can argue that, but they’re in the discussion. And yeah, with today’s rules, the entire defense would have probably been suspended at one time or another, but… it’s not our fault that the game has gotten soft. Some of these modern day QBs… they wouldn’t be protected by “daddy”… we would have put the fear of God in them, and you know, the key to a great defense is pressure on the QB, and those “Monsters”… we did that.
Of course, the offense wasn’t a slouch either. You may have heard of him… Walter Payton! The punky QB is near the top of everybody’s all-time Bears QB list; if he’s not, you’re an idiot. It’s not like we’ve got a whole lot of choices. The offensive line… very impressive. Then there was Ditka and Buddy Ryan. I’m not living in the past, I’m not a total meatball, but the 85 Bears were the absolute shit… they were awesome, nobody could mess with them, except, you know, Marino and the Dolphins that one night; man I wish we would have faced them in the Super Bowl. There is not a doubt in my mind that we wouldn’t have paid them back in a big way. Essentially, that loss against them, in week 13 I believe it was, secured our Super Bowl victory; there was no stopping us after that reality check.
I could go on… if you want to read more about that season, click above, crack open an Old Style, order an Italian Beef sandwich, and some pizza for dessert, and enjoy. Waiting for that one day when Chicago will have another Super Bowl winner. Bear Down!!!
