January 10, 2023: Just Got Paid

Come on, everybody knows the song. Just got paid, Friday night, party hunting, feeling right… I remember when I used to get paid every other Friday. This was before direct deposit, when I would take that paper check to the bank, and cash it. Back then, $1500 felt like a lot, especially cash money in my pocket. I would take the el home, and think… if they only knew how much money I had on me. Yeah, I was on my way to making BIG money, driving a Lexus, and everything else that comes with it. But at that moment, I was just ready to go out and party for the weekend. In my own apartment, all my bills covered, ready to have some fun, not a care in the world, money burning a hole in my pocket… Now, the money comes in one day, and goes out the next; not a whole lot of partying going on. Still, always feels good to get paid… Well, somebody else got paid on Tuesday; you may have heard of him. Roquan Smith signed a 5 year 100 million dollar contract; guess the Ravens valued him huh?

I know there is a whole lot of good Bears mojo going on, I feel it no doubt, but… seeing Roquan continue to do well since we traded him, seeing him get paid, thinking about how good of a player he may be… it still kind of pisses me off that the Bears traded him. I always liked him; I thought he’d be the next great Bears LB. He was a big part of the defense; one position that we didn’t have to address this offseason. But I guess that was the real problem huh? He brought so much to the defense, his presence the entire year, may have lead to the Bears winning a game or two more, and screwing up our #1 pick, right? So, letting Roquan go was the final key piece in getting the #1 pick; you OK with that?

Look, I like Jack Sanborn too. Great story, local kid… he’s played really well; I hope he remains a part of this defense; I hope he plays a big part on this defense. But… he’s no Roquan, ok? The Bears will draft players on the defensive side of the ball; the Bears will sign free agents on the defensive side of the ball. Roquan Smith will NOT be a part of this defense. Is he a generational, once in a lifetime talent? Not sure about all that. Will he be a multiple Pro Bowl type LB? I think so. Will he end up in the HOF? Maybe. So we dumped a potential HOF linebacker to make sure we got the #1 pick? I’m sure there are other surrounding factors; it’s never that simple. But if you peel it all away, that was the “trade” we made. Like I said, we good with that?

We have no choice at this point; we’re moving forward, and we have A LOT to be excited about. I think that right now, the Bears are setup to make a big jump; I think we have brighter days ahead, and hopefully a Super Bowl trophy at the end of that rainbow sometime soon. I thought Roquan would be a part of the next great Bears team; I was wrong. Maybe Roquan will end up in the Hall of Fame; maybe we’ll get our Super Bowl. Maybe this will end up a win-win type deal. Good luck to Roquan; congrats on getting paid. And of course, good luck to us; I hope Poles makes more good decisions than bad. Bear Down!!!
