I know Chicago sports is kind of in shambles right now, but… if you take a step back away from that, you can still be happy. Yes, after a weekend like this, it’s just another confirmation, that sports are great!
It was an action packed weekend; I’m going to start this discussion with Saturday NOT Friday night… I already talked about that depressing shit. But yes, Saturday… Tuned in early to the 3rd place game at the World Cup; didn’t watch the whole thing, but we were lucky enough to see all 3 goals in the game. I’m going to miss the World Cup; back to that in a second. Next up, is probably the best sporting thing going right about now: my son’s 5th grade basketball team. One of the dads told me how I could check the standings online; been waiting for that! And yes, it was confirmed, that they are undefeated, and obviously, in 1st place. They continued their great play on Saturday with another W. My son continued his great play with another double digit performance with 15 points. His confidence is really soaring right now; I’m here for every minute of that. We watched a little bit more of his school’s basketball team before taking off; we had to grab something to eat. We did, and in the next chapter of sports this weekend, were watching UCLA and Kentucky play in college basketball; what a great game. Yes, UCLA is a potential landing spot for my son; the scouts aren’t out quite yet, but they will be… haha. Even though Juzang left to the NBA, that Bruins team is still legit; looking forward to following them throughout the season. Because of all this, we missed one of the greatest comebacks in NFL history; that was nuts. But I did get my NFL fill on Saturday night with the Dolphins Bills game; absolutely loved it. I think Buffalo is going to take it all, and I’m completely fine with that. Watching them play on Saturday night, in front of their fans, in the cold and snow… brought back memories. I can’t wait for the Bears to be back in that position, at the top of their division, playing meaningful games, in front of the faithful, in the cold and snow… I’m sooo ready for that again. Until then, we live through others. To end the day, I actually got a phone call to go to the Bears game on Sunday; I felt bad to say no, but… Sunday was just as busy.
It started off early, watching the pre-game World Cup Final stuff, getting ready for church. Yes, we had church at 945am; my son was serving. We would miss most of the game. My brother was updating me; we knew it was 2-0 Argentina before the mass started. My son and I had worked out signals for me to update him with the score, except I never updated him after that. It wasn’t until church ended, that I got the next text… and then another soon after; France had tied it up. Yes! Not because I was rooting for France (I wasn’t), but because this is going to go to OT and potential PKs… and we’ll get to see it! And we did. I’m not a soccer expert by any means, but holy shit… that was the greatest one I’ve ever seen; sounds like many others agree… maybe the greatest one ever!?!? It ended just in time for the Bears game to start, but… we’d hear some of that on the radio, heading to my son’s next game. Sure, the Bears would lose again, but we knew this; my son’s team on the other hand… stayed undefeated. He scored double digits for the 4th straight game; this time it would be 14 points… the first three were 12, 20, and 15 respectively if you’re wondering… haha. He and his team continue their roll, but wait, there’s more… As soon as his game ended, we came home, changed, and headed to see the DePaul women’s basketball game vs Georgetown. It was a school outing of sorts; it was a lot of fun. First time I was in their new arena, same place where the men play, same place where the Chicago Sky play; it was really nice. I bust out my DePaul Mark Aguirre jersey for the occasion, after all, I am an alumni. They won too, and after a quick stop at Jim’s off of Roosevelt, we were on our way home.
Yeah, so see… sports ARE great. Even though the Bears lost, I lost my fantasy playoff matchup (one to go), and the Bulls capped off the weekend with another loss (thankfully I didn’t see it… do I even have to mention the Blackhawks at this point?) there is still much to enjoy. And oh yeah, I heard the Cubs finally signed somebody… let’s keep it rolling.
