December 7, 2022: Good Faith Effort

So… the Cubs are making moves to improve the major league roster??? If you count Cody Bellinger and Jameson Taillon as substantial moves, I got news for you. Hey, it’s something, and something is better than nothing, but… we’re the Cubs, not the Reds or the A’s who are strapped for cash. We’re making small market moves with big market pockets. I’m still waiting for the SS announcement… If we don’t get Correa, or at the very least Bogaerts… Swanson would be nice, but… it’s too late for Trea Turner; watch out for the Phillies. So far the needle hasn’t really moved for me, that is, until I heard the news earlier today. Willson Contreras to the Cardinals… hold on, let me get my barf bag.

So the needle finally moved, to the pissed off side of things, breaking the glass enclosing the needle. Why the Cubs would not want to lock up one of the best catchers in the game is beyond me. Sure, we were “relieved” at last year’s deadline, when he was NOT moved, but… the writing still seemed to be on the wall; there were still no extension talks. OR, maybe Jed made another “good faith effort” to Willson? Doubt it. For some reason, like the Bears with Roquan, or even the Bulls with Jimmy, maybe the Sox with Abreu (?), the Cubs did NOT want to move forward with our rookie catcher from the 2016 World Series team. With his and J-Hey’s departure, that leaves only Kyle… 2016 was only 6 years ago…

It’s puzzling, especially when the alternative at the catcher position, an important one, that our manager, ex-catcher David Ross should know, is… who exactly? This is a clear sign of how serious the Cubs are about the 2023 season; not that serious. Prove me wrong. Sign Correa and then some, and then we’ll talk. Until then, the Cubs haven’t done jack shit to make a serious roster improvement heading into next season; yes, I know there are still 3 months until Opening Day. The subtraction of Willson wipes out the two FA additions so far, by far. Thanks Jed.

And, and… to make it worse, the Cardinals?!?! Holy shit. I feel bad for Willson, going to that shit hole, to play for the self proclaimed best fans in baseball, when we know they’re horse caca. Ask Dexter Fowler how that went; that makes me sad just thinking about it. Jon Lester was even there for a quick minute; more finger down the throat type stuff. I hate the Cardinals, that’s no secret; I love Willson though… that’s why this really, really sucks. Even if the Astros would have scooped him, OK; still sucks that the powers that be figured we’d be better off without him, but at least we wouldn’t have to see him multiple series’ per year, in the red uniforms of our sworn enemy. This is starting to feel like 2021 Trade Deadline all over again…

There was one piece of good news today, and that’s Pat Hughes making it to the broadcasting HOF, an honor WAY over due. But hey, at least he’s still alive to receive the honor… I’ll talk more about that another day; THAT makes me really happy, so I want to dedicate a blog to that when I’m really happy, because today is NOT that day. Willson to the Shit-Birds??? I would punch Jed Hoyer right in the face if I saw him right now…
