October 21, 2022: One More Rant

posted in: Cubs | 0

I’m sorry; I’ve tried to be happy for them… I AM happy for all the ex-Cubs still playing. Besides the fact that I’ll root for most ex-Cubs, especially 2016 ex-Cubs, and besides the fact that this postseason has turned into a “no-lose” proposition for me, I’m still fricking upset. I’m still disturbed about what the Cubs did, starting at last year’s trade deadline, capped off with the offseason. It made this year one of the toughest to watch my Cubbies, constantly getting pissed about the current state of the team, and how that was a conscious decision; I’ve beat this horse more dead than you could possibly imagine, yet… there’s always room for one more rant, right???

I read something on Twitter along the lines of, could you imagine if one team had all these guys on their team… these guys being Rizzo, Schwarber, Darvish, and Castellanos… that was a very, very funny… ironic statement that got me triggered again. Yes, the Cubs DID have all those guys… and spoiler alert: kept NONE of them!!! OK, we’re not the Yankees or the Dodgers, even though we could be with our payroll… yeah, we COULD have kept them all. But how about just one of them??? How about just anybody??? Nope, not the direction of this team. We’re going to absolutely punt the 2022 baseball season, playing in one of the weakest divisions in baseball, and now, have to sit back and watch 2 WILD CARD teams play for the chance to represent the NL in the World Series… F me.

There should be no year where a team like the Cubs waves a white flag before Game 1 of 162, yet here we are. We ran out the Plumber… Frank Schwindel for those that don’t know… you know, Schwindel & Sons Plumbing since 1934… and the Dentist… Patrick Wisdom… wisdom tooth… Dentist… get it??? One of these guys will never play in the majors again; another one is hanging on by a string. Yeah, this is who we built our team around? Yeah, and those free agent signings… of Suzuki and Stroman… hey, they’re not bad players, but excuse me if I wanted to get a top level free agent? I’m sorry that I have that expectation from a multi-billion dollar franchise. We’re not the Cincinnati Reds who rely on the 12 or so games the Cubs come to town to make their nut, or the Oakland As, who have taken the Moneyball concept to the extreme with Penny Ball this year. We’re the fat pocket Chicago Cubs who chose to put bricks of dough under the mattress this year vs spending it… that just makes me feel great.

Yeah, I know… we still have Contreras… for a little while longer, and Happy, who did turn in a pretty damn good year; I love Nico and all, but whew… we need some horses. Adding a couple top free agents this offseason should be top priority, but, but… what about all of our minor leaguers who will be here soon??? The cheap, I mean, rebuild route was a brutal, brutal decision made by the brass; who needs a perennial playoff team anyways? Yet, here we are… here we are. Unfortunately, I doubt this is my last rant about this subject, unless of course the Cubs step it up this offseason… but maybe the timing just isn’t right… Why do I do this to myself??? I just can’t help it.
