September 21, 2022: Who Cares More?

Funny… I was just talking about the comment that Justin Fields made a few days ago, and here he goes clarifying it. I’m glad Justin Fields cares; let’s just start there. The fact that he took the time to mention that, and clear it up, just shows you that he gets it. I’m glad the guys in the locker room care; I’m glad that the loss on Sunday hurt them… any loss should hurt. I’m glad they’re putting in work; it SHOULD mean a whole hell of a lot what result comes from all that work they’re putting in. This is their job, their profession; I know myself… I care a lot about my job. I hate when I “lose”, or in my case, make mistakes. I want to be great at my job, for my family, for everyone I work with, for the customers. I expect that same work ethic/desire from my teams; there are times when I don’t feel like that is the case. There have been teams that I have supported over the years, guys that I have cheered on, that really don’t seem to care; like win, lose, or draw, it really doesn’t matter to them. We make this assumption based on what we see, primarily ON the field. When a guy doesn’t seem to be making the effort, like that famous Allen Robinson play against the Packers last year, we get pissed. Why do we get pissed? It’s because WE care too. Who cares more?

The players SHOULD care more; that shouldn’t even be a question. Yet, examples like the one I just mentioned, lead us to believe differently. The feeling that we have walking into work on Monday after ANOTHER loss to the Packers. Starting our busy week after another kick to the groin. Mondays are bad enough. Why does the result of a Bears game matter? Why does a win or loss impact the following days/week so much? Well, because we love our Bears; they are OUR team. Even though we are not suiting up on Sunday, we feel as though we are part of this team… because we care so much. Just like we want to “win” in our daily lives, jobs, relationships, etc, we want our teams to do the same; that’s a part of it, for some of us, a BIG part of it. We wear our teams gear. We go to the games. We take time out of our busy lives to watch them, to support them; if we could do more, we would… as if making sure we wear the same jersey, not washing it, that brought us a win last week, or sitting in the same place on the couch that helped the Bears win last week, isn’t enough… haha. Hey, if we could do more, we would… like fricking screaming our heads off at the game, or for most of us, at the TVs… haha. We support our guys, and yeah, we talk trash about them too when they’re not doing well, because we can… because we’re invested in this too… if not physically, definitely mentally. Maybe there’s something wrong with me…

Yeah, well, maybe… but it is what it is; I love the Bears and root for them to win each and every week; I believe they can… most of the time. I was a fan before some of these current players, OK, maybe all of these current players were born; I’ll be a fan when these players have left to go to another team and/or retire. I’m happy to see that Justin Fields gets it; I’m happy to hear that the boys care. I’m happy that he addressed the comment about a sensitive topic that some of us may take pretty seriously, even if it wasn’t really all that bad. So just to be clear: we care and we’re glad you care. Now let’s kick the Texans ass… Bear Down!
