I saw something the other day that said the Cubs were officially eliminated from postseason contention. No shit. I could have told you that back in April. Seeing that it’s finally “official”, just reminds me of how much of a joke this season has been… and now I need to talk about it.
When your team trades away all of your best players and replaces them with a “bunch of guys”, what do you think is going to happen? When your team chooses to save money instead of adding someone worth a shit (no disrespect to Stroman and Suzuki), what does that tell you? I don’t care what kind of spin is used, the Cubs punted this season, point blank, period. They punted the season because they didn’t want to extend anybody; they still don’t… what does that show prospective free agents that are considering the Cubs as their next destination? But our minor league system is ranked a lot higher than it was a year ago… well, zip a dee doo da…
It’s frustrating. I know, I know… the dead horse, yeah, well, it’s going to get beat until something changes. Talking to Sox fans… at least they had some promise this year; yeah, they shit the bed, but at least there was a chance. We knew… we KNEW going into this season that the Cubs had ZERO chance to do anything. Even the most optimistic of us, if we really dug deep, knew that this season was a joke from the get go. The powers that be in the Cubs front office CHOSE this path for us. I guess making the playoffs every year from 2015 to 2020 didn’t matter… no, not good enough. Let’s BLOW IT UP and start over… trying to build that perennial playoff qualifier. Bold strategy… but the minor league guys… and the guys we chose not to extend aren’t doing that great… and the free agents that we should have signed… they, they… aren’t doing… that… great…. either….
There’s no reason this should have been the path chosen for US, not with the resources that we have. There are other MLB teams who don’t have millions and millions of dollars to spend; I’m sure their fan bases are still pissed too. But the Cubs??? We’re rich, absolutely filthy M-Fing rich. But let’s wait “for the right time” to spend. Will it be this offseason? Will they finally shut me the hell up? Will I finally be able to leave that poor deceased horse alone? I won’t hold my breath…
This almost feels like a Hate File for the 2022 Cubs; IF I dropped that, it would have to wait until after the season is over. I have plenty of blogs to copy and paste from to fill up and immediately close that file. Hope will spring eternal once again next spring; will that hope actually mean something? Will the Cubs have a chance to do something next year, instead of wasting a year choosing not to be competitive in a not-so-great division? God I hope so. I will always love my Cubs, but man… this has been a tough one to watch. Is it over yet?
