September 19, 2022: Telling the Future

OK, let’s keep it positive this Monday morning. The Monday following a Bears loss is hard; the Monday following a Bears loss to the Packers, well… I already hate Mondays, so… Yeah, let’s turn it around. Not going to let that shit weigh me down; I’m into positive thinking. As we think about the first 2 Bears games, and look ahead to the rest of the season, there is no reason why we cannot be positive.

Raise your hands if you picked the Bears to beat the Packers in Week 2 before the season; I don’t have my hand up. Sure, I got hyped after the Week 1 win; couple that with my hate for the Packers, and yeah, we were going to kick their ass!!! If I go back to my season preview, where I was busy telling the future for the Bears season, I remember I picked the Bears to lose this game; most of us probably did. I DID have them beating the Niners in Week 1, and looking ahead to the next couple weeks… I’m seeing some Ws.

Next week at home against the Texans. If the boys can’t win that game… Sure, it’s the homecoming for Lovie Smith, and if we know Lovie, he’ll have his team conservatively ready to play. The Texans are not a good team, but they played tough in their first 2 games. This will not be a push over by any means, but… it has to be a Bears win. The following week we head east to face the New York Giants. I know it’s a road game, but it’s a winnable road game. Maybe some thought I was off my rocker picking the Bears to start 3-1 a few months back, well… not so much any more right? The Bears schedule is NOT tough. If we can continue to show signs, we should be able to win a decent amount of games this year.

Progress, pointing the right direction, getting better… these are all terms we want to use to describe the Bears season. After 2 games, I’m feeling good things about this Bears team. Sure, Fields hasn’t turned into that stud QB yet; he’s had some moments, but he still has ways to go… in this NEW offense. The weapons on offense certainly have not been utilized, outside of David Montgomery, who we should continue to lean on as the season progresses. The defense has been good. Yes, the Packers ran the ball down our throats, which opened up throws that are easy for Rodgers, regardless of which senior citizen he’s throwing to, but… we tried to hang tough. There were some nice plays, but that couldn’t overcome all the times we got gashed on the ground. The Packers offense dictated that game (again), and we didn’t have enough to respond. I hate giving the Packers credit, but… fact is, they still have more talent than us; that doesn’t change overnight, or in the case of back to back HOF QBs, it hasn’t changed for many, many years. I love looking back on the big Bears wins over the Packers over the last few decades; sad thing is, I can remember all of them because there are so few. Patience… patience…

But we only play GB one more time; by that time, the Bears will have been busy “getting better.” Fields will have more control of this offense. The defense will be shored up. We may have a chance next time around. There are 10 games between now and then, against teams OTHER than the Packers. I certainly feel the Bears have a chance to win at least half of those. My preseason prediction had the Bears at 8-4 heading into that next matchup with the Pack; if we win half, then we’d be 6-6. I think I’d be OK with either one, as long as we keep seeing “progress”. The Bears aren’t a top team in the NFL, but they certainly aren’t the worst. Let’s keep this thing moving in the “right direction”… Bear Down!
