September 18, 2022: Not Ready Yet

posted in: Bears | 0

Deja vu all over again, right? The Packers beat the Bears on national TV. Bears coming off a win, feeling strong; the Packers coming off a loss, looking vulnerable. Packers took it to us yet again; typically I’d be furious… Don’t get me wrong; I’m mad, yet… in this case, I’m immediately switching to silver lining mode. Sure, the Bears are not ready yet for the big time, but it does feel like they can still make some noise this season. A beatdown in Green Bay by the cheeseheads shouldn’t change that feeling…

You know what cracked me up? Those refs throwing that first flag at us, for some weird “new rule” bullshit where I’m not sure our guy even made contact. I could just see it… in the meeting room before the game. “First one to throw a flag on the Bears gets a bottle of scotch”… these refs. Bad enough we have to beat the Packers in Lambeau with their HOF QB still at the helm, we know we have to beat the refs too. But just like most times, they may have helped them, but that wasn’t the main reason we couldn’t get it done.

It was a great start to the game. Forcing the Pack to take the 3 points, punching them in the mouth, marching right down the field, taking a 7-3 lead. My chest puffed out. Maybe they ARE ready… well, hold that thought. The Packers followed our lead, and starting pounding the ball down our throat. Throw in a Rodgers on point throw here and there, and Green Bay scored 21 unanswered. Game over right? Well, yes, but no… The Bears for some reason got away from the running game for the rest of the first half. When they picked it back up in the 2nd half, they put their hands up, and said “we’re not dead yet”. Then, on that 4th and goal at the half yard line, I felt like Matt Nagy took over the play calling. I hate when I agree with the national broadcasters, but for the love of God, why are we lining up in shotgun from the half yard line? I will NEVER understand it. Sad thing is… Fields and the OL got about 3 yards of push… which would have been more than enough had he lined up under center. I would have been OK with a QB sneak, although handing it off to Montgomery, or even Herbert, would have been just fine too. But no… a shotgun QB sneak!?!? Come on guys, we don’t have to reinvent the wheel here… Game, set, match.

The Bears didn’t give up, which was great; the Packers are still better than us, which sucks. I keep waiting for this reign of terror to end; I keep waiting for the tide to turn our way. I was hoping this would happen BEFORE Rodgers goes off to jerk off some goats for his immunization retirement treatment, but… we’ll get another chance on December 4th. In the meantime, and always, FU GB…
