September 14, 2022: Surprise Surprise

Did you see what the Cubs did this week? Yes, they’re still playing, playing out the string here in mid-September. The games are pretty meaningless for the Cubs, have been for a while, but not so much for their opponent this week. Yeah, the Mets are fighting to stay atop the NL East, so excuse me if I was totally shocked that the Cubs swept them IN NEW YORK this week. Surprise, Surprise…

I kind of like the Mets; I know some Cubs fans will take that as blasphemy. You know, the whole 1969 season, with the black cat, the Cubs collapse, and the Mets hot streak which saw them surpass the Cubs in the division, and eventually win the World Series. The Amazing Mets I believe was their nickname. I do have a reason to hate the Mets too; they actually do have a Hate File I believe. Actually, no, I take that back; Daniel Murphy has his own Hate File due to his out-of-this-world performance in the 2015 NLCS… he or the Mets didn’t do as well in the World Series thankfully. Yeah, I hated them for a quick minute due to 2015, but 2016 made everything feel a lot better. I still can’t believe he ended up playing for us; that was a disaster. But yeah, back to the Mets, I really like the 1986 team; read a book about them. Still haven’t seen that 30 for 30, but I will. A team full of “colorful personalities” winning it all… like that a lot. For the record, the Cubs finished a cool 37 games behind the Mets in 1986…

This year’s Mets are a likable bunch, at least to me. It starts with their closer and his awesome walk in song. My fantasy baseball teams are represented by a bunch of Mets: Jacob DeGrom, Chris Bassitt, Francisco Lindor, Pete Alonso, Brandon Nimmo, and the above mentioned closer, Edwin Diaz. Considering the other options of NL playoff teams, it’s not a huge surprise that the Mets are on top of my list of teams I want to see in the World Series. At the very least, they are the lesser of the other evils. They’re scuffling right now; they will still be in the postseason, but their division lead is in danger. You know you’re really scuffling if the Cubs can sweep you on your home field. The Cubs only other sweep on the road this year was against another NL East team, the Phillies right after the All Star break.

I tuned in a bit on the radio; lots of time in the car these days, dropping off and picking up. But when I heard that Pat Hughes didn’t make the trip, I ended up flipping to some music anyways… For me, the Cubs season has been over for a while now. I did want to try to get to one more game, but that’s looking like it’s not going to happen; oh well. Of course, I will miss them when they’re gone, even if they’ve been “gone” pretty much all year. Yeah, although the weather hasn’t turned yet, the season has definitely shifted to football… But yeah, nice job Cubbies with the sweep of the Mets. I’m sure all the players and fans of that 1969 team are loving it…
