Let’s take a quick break from Chicago sports and talk about another show that just ended. If you haven’t watched the Better Call Saul series finale yet, then maybe stop reading now. We finally watched it on Wednesday night; yeah, I know… how did we wait THAT long??? It was about as good an ending to a long multi-season show as you can have, in my humble opinion.
I’ve talked about this before: how do you end a show that has been on for years? The fact that it is the last show of a series, and the fact that people have stuck with it for all those years, means natural disappointment, right? One of your favorite shows is coming to an end! That sucks! Yes, watching Sopranos, Breaking Bad, and the Wire come to an end after such magnificent journeys, was a downer for sure. How do you combat that natural disappointment and leave your faithful audience fulfilled?
In the case of Better Call Saul, I think they did just that; they brought things full circle. Jimmy came back! The two characters at the heart of this series were reunited. The fact that “Saul” did what he did, turning his 7.5 years into 86, for the single reason to attempt to repair his relationship with Kim, was something. They talked about a time machine and regrets… Saul never had any, at least not any NOT related to money. Well, after all those years, from Jimmy to Saul to Gene to Saul to Jimmy, he finally figured out his biggest regret. Kim and him were such an awesome pair throughout the show; the fact that they reunited, if only for a few moments in a prison, really left a good feeling in my heart. Just one man’s opinion…
I’d love for there to be more… I thought we had been setup for an epic Sopranos movie on the big screen when it ended the way it did all those years ago; it never happened… well, until the prequel, that I still haven’t watched! That’s on the list for sure, especially since I finished re-watching the show. Speaking about re-watching… now that Better Call Saul has ended, we’re right back at the beginning of Breaking Bad… what a perfect time to start it over! The ending of Breaking Bad was kind of cool… although we did lose Walter, it was in epic fashion… and Jesse survived to eventually come back in El Camino, which was good too. The Wire… well, the ending was OK; felt like they tried to pull together too many loose ends at the end of the series… like another few episodes were necessary maybe? Guess there’s some show on HBO that has a lot of those characters back in it; may have to check that out. Another one on the docket is Peaky Blinders. Now that BCS is over, the path has been cleared for our next show…
Yeah, these TV series are such great distractions. Other than watching my teams play on TV, watching a series is my preferred viewing experience… although game shows, cooking shows, and old comedy sitcom episodes are certainly in the mix as well. OK, let’s get back to it…
