August 16, 2022: Radio Therapy

Always sucks getting back to work after being on vacation; lots of catch up to be done. On top of that, having family over this weekend, so need to help in getting things ready, which this afternoon, including putting our pool away and washing our deck. Yeah, it was a busy day. Instead of rushing to eat once I was done, I opted for a beer and a cigar; like I said, long day… I sat on our freshly cleaned deck, cracked a 312, and lit up my Dominican. It was a beautiful evening; the one missing piece to my relaxation session was some radio therapy. Yes, I’m talking about Pat & Ron on 670. Let me count the ways I love them.

We’ve recently lost a legend in Vin Scully. I enjoyed listening to his solo broadcast of Dodgers games when I was in LA, and had nothing better to do. Of course, there were all of his BIG moments, but just the normal middle of the week regular season game was when he was at his finest. I feel the same way about Pat Hughes. It literally feels like you’re just hanging out with him talking baseball, while he naturally calls the play by play action. He is a natural, and should be in the Hall of Fame one day himself; it’s a travesty that he isn’t in already, but we’re keeping it positive. Yes, positive… it’s been tough to be that way, even for me, this season with the Cubs. Listening to Pat, I forgot about all that, as I puffed on my cigar.

His partner is no slouch either. Ron Coomer is a nice complement to Pat. The “other Ron” was also a great partner for Pat Hughes. Sure, Ron Santo was a lot more homerish, but that’s OK… you should be like that a bit. Even though Pat plays it right down the middle, you know he’s rooting for the Cubs; it’s the same with Ron Coomer. Like I said, it’s like just hanging out with a couple other Cubs fans sharing thoughts on the action. Of course, this sharing is only one way, through the radio waves; I do not talk back to them… most of the time. I do smile a lot, even if the action, like on this night, got a little dicey late. They crack me up; maybe I’m just corny… or maybe I enjoy their stories, and their little jokes here and there. Tonight one of them surrounded the winner of the attendance game, which they play every game. Ron won, but he wasn’t that enthusiastic about it, as Pat noted. Ron responded with being cool on the outside, but going crazy on the inside; I chuckled. When Pat responded that the scary part was that he knew exactly what he was talking about, I chuckled again. This is great stuff.

I ended up finishing the game inside in front of the TV for the 9th, and eventually 10th and 11th innings. I like Sutcliffe and all (still not a big fan of Boog), but if I could, I would listen to every single game via the radio; this isn’t the first time I said this. And yes, the Cubs actually won this evening, which makes it that much better. Yet, on this night, I wouldn’t have even cared; I was already happy just listening to Pat & Ron… no joke. They continue to be a bright spot in an otherwise dim season… I appreciate them.
