The end of July brings us to the end of my son’s baseball season. It’s been a rough, but fun ride. His team isn’t the greatest by any means, but he’s had fun with the kids, and most importantly, he’s been playing ball all summer. Now, it’s time to put a bow on it.
The original final tourney of the season actually got cancelled. Besides the weather, it feels like there has been multiple cancellations, reschedules, etc; I know it’s a commitment… I get that, but it’s important, especially when trying to schedule other things, like swimming, family vacations, etc, that the practice and game schedule that’s released is stuck to as much as possible. In fact, there never really has been a practice schedule. But yeah, the game schedule was released pretty early on, but my gut tells me at least half has been cancelled or rescheduled. Anyways… good to the last drop I guess. Instead of travelling to this final tourney, we would be hosting something at our home park; that was fine by me. But… the weather didn’t cooperate this weekend. Thankfully, the games didn’t get cancelled, but only moved to another park, one with field turf. The games must go on!
We’ve been 0 for every tournament we’ve entered this year. Yeah, Milwaukee was especially rough; Northbrook was a bit more competitive. But yeah, zero wins so far; really hoped the kids would play well this weekend, and at least earn a W or two. The first game on Saturday started off really well. Well, actually we were down 2-0 after the top half of the first, but we roared back in the bottom. We already had plated 3 runs before one of our kids hit a grand slam; yeah, 7 runs with nobody out!!! But hold on a minute… 5 run per inning rule was in effect, or so we thought. So we can only have 5 runs, even if like the grand slam that happened, that single play got us to 7 runs… Yep, exactly! It’s really unfortunate that we found out after the fact that this was wrong; this would especially suck considering we would end up losing this game by 1 run. You got to have your shit together, I’m sorry. Understanding the rules, making sure everybody is on the same page… part of my frustration; Ok, let’s continue.
The 2nd game wasn’t close, the wrong way. Yeah, we got plastered by a team we knew well. This team was the team my son faced in his first game of the season; we beat them in a really, really good game. Since then though, we’ve faced them 2 other times, maybe 3 including today, and they’ve beat us up. An 0-2 start to this makeshift tourney sucked. My son did OK. He had a walk and a strikeout in the first game; in the 2nd game, he hit the ball hard twice, but right at kids, ending up going 0-2. I actually got one of them on video. I really haven’t taken that much video this year, but figured I’d grab this AB; too bad it didn’t get past that third baseman… that would have rolled for a while.
Anyways, on to Sunday… looking for our first tournament win on the last day of the season…
