I know I’ve talked some about my son’s baseball season. This season will be coming to an end this weekend. I don’t think I talked about his “other” sport this summer; yeah, can’t forget about swimming…
It’s not one of the “standard” sports, football, baseball, basketball, or hockey, but it’s something my son has been involved in since he was about 18 months old; he’s always loved the water. It felt like he did get a little burned out… funny saying that about a 7-8 year old… haha. We didn’t force him to join the swim team when he was first asked back then, but he came back to it. The next time around, he wanted IN. Last year was his first full year on the swim team at the Y; he did well. I know it won’t get any easier to manage him playing multiple sports, but I think it’s worth it, to try to keep him doing as much as possible, for as long as possible. He’s not quite at that point where choices need to be made. Sure, from time to time, there will be conflicts, and one sport will suffer, but for now, he certainly can continue to do both.
We signed him up to swim this summer. With baseball, he’s really only attended about 50% (if that) of the possible swim practices. He missed out on the first two meets because of our vacation and a baseball tourney, so we wanted to get him in the 3rd one, which was the last before the summer state meet. I don’t think I talked about this already, but if I did, sorry, but since he did so well, I wanted to make sure I mentioned it. After all, one day he’ll be able to look back and read this stuff, or at least that’s one of my reasons for doing this… kind of like keeping a diary of my son’s sporting events. OK, let’s get to it.
In his 4 events, the maximum a kid can participate in, he finished 2nd, 1st, 1st, and 2nd. He brought home the overall 3rd place trophy for his age group. Not too shabby for a part-time swimmer. He finished 1.5 seconds off making state in 2 separate events. The nice thing about his birthday… yeah, maybe I did already talk about this… is that he won’t turn 11 until AFTER the next state meet in March. Between then and now, he’ll have a real chance to improve upon his times enough to qualify for the state tournament; that’s some exciting stuff.
So yeah, swimming… let’s keep this going. Similar to other sports, if/when he grows a bit more, his performance will only improve; it may be more true in swimming than any other sport. It’s just science I guess… the taller he grows, the longer his strokes will be, and the faster he will become, no? Yeah, I think that’s right. So who knows… Baseball, basketball, swimming… let’s keep it rolling, and see where the chips may fall… go boy go!
