July 16, 2022: The Soto Sweepstakes

posted in: Cubs | 0

Did you hear the news? Juan Soto turned down a big offer to stay in Washington, which means he’ll be getting traded soon. If there was one player who could help me try to move forward past the debacle the Cubs have been the past year, it’s Juan Soto.

The dude is an absolute stud; he’s young too. Who would we have to trade to get him? Pretty much anybody on our current roster, in our farm system, and our draft picks should all be in the mix. The better question is who would we NOT want to trade. I’d rather not trade Willson, Nico, Keegan, Justin, and Kyle; everybody else is absolutely fair game… and no, I’m not missing anybody. Offer them the kitchen sink, who cares? Get this man in Chicago!

Now would be a nice time for the Nationals to pull a Cubs-type trade. What I mean by that, is trading Soto for dimes on the dollar. Look at what we got for all our guys that we dumped… not much, not much at all. Maybe, just maybe another team would be as stupid as us; if that’s a possibility, then please, please let it be this time, with the Nationals only taking a few guys from us for Soto.

I told my son; I also told him to not get his hopes up, as I seem to be doing here as I write this. Truth is, timing probably isn’t “right” yet for the Cubs to spend their money, which is absolute BS. Juan Soto would be a game changer, and with his age, we’d be able to lock him up for the rest of this decade. So, maybe not all the pieces would be ready in a year or two, but just adding Soto kicks this thing into gear. Bring up some more of our young guys, sign another guy or two in the offseason; again, this division isn’t out of the question. It wasn’t out of the question last year either, before we dumped our guys… the anniversary of that is coming up… ready to get pissed off all over again.

Watching a little baseball on Friday night did that to me already. Seeing Anthony Rizzo in a Yankees uniform. G-dammit, he should have been a Cub for the rest of his career; just a horrible, horrible move. It’s just not right, but… it’s the hand we were dealt as fans; too bad we didn’t have some kind of say. I wonder… for all these guys who are supposed to be so smart, I’m sure if you found the right fans to run this thing, they surely couldn’t do worse… I’m up to be part of that team, if anybody is listening.

My first move? Trading for Juan Soto; signing him for the rest of this decade. Isn’t the Heyward money coming off the books soon? That will help pay for part of his contract, as will all that money that the Cubs have in the bank right now. If not Soto, then who? Which MLB player would you rather have for the next decade? I’m sure I could name a few more, but Soto is definitely in that top 5 conversation. Here’s a chance for our guys to make this a little better; here’s a chance to show us they’re not completely full of shit. If the Cubs want to win any time soon, then we should be all in on The Soto Sweepstakes. But like I told my son, I’m not going to run out and buy that Soto jersey for him just quite yet… surprise me Cubs, surprise me!
