May 8, 2022: Opposites Meet

Cubs Dodgers used to be a thing. Two of the winningest teams in the National League for the past decade, meeting in the playoffs a couple times, each bringing home one World Series title, this Cubs Dodgers thing should have been built to last. Sad thing is, only one team got that memo; sadder thing is, it was the Cubs who didn’t live up to their part of the bargain. When the two teams met this weekend at Wrigley, it wasn’t a series… it was like an exhibition, featuring the best team in the NL, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and a small market amateur club, the Chicago Cubs; it went just like that too, with the Dodgers sweeping the Cubs in the 3 game set. Pathetic.

Here come the Dodgers, marching out a lineup full of studs. Their payroll was ridiculous already, yet they still anted up, and signed Freddie Freeman. Thankfully the Cubs have Schwindel… no need for an all star first baseman. Yeah, the Dodgers are an absolute juggernaut. They have the money, and they’re not afraid to spend it. They’re putting the absolute best possible product on the field; they’re doing it the way it should be done, of course, for those teams that have the money. The Cubs on the other hand… they got the money, OK? Let’s not kid ourselves. Our payroll should be right up there with the Dodgers and everybody else with cash; there’s really no excuse not to be, other than the need for their owners to use this cash elsewhere, worst case, in their pockets. The Cubs are fielding a roster that is a complete shit show, to be brutally honest. Thank God for the Reds; they’ll ensure any of us win that bet saying the Cubs won’t finish in last of their division. Unfortunately, the Reds will beat us out for a higher draft pick, which appears to be the only thing left playing for… and we’re only in May; too soon?

Look, I’m going to watch and support my team regardless. Tickets will be cheaper; Wrigley won’t be as packed. Both benefits to the Cubs sucking, yet… watching them play day in day out for 162 will be like a repeated kick in the nuts. The Cubs traded away their best players and never replaced them. They’re acting like a small market team, but in actuality, are a big market team with asshole owners. They know we’ll love our Cubbies no matter what, and are taking full advantage of that, stockpiling money until we take another shot; I thought the Cubs were going to be built for sustained success??? Although that DID last longer than any other time in our lives, it’s over now… no sign of when that’ll be back. Yes, while the Dodgers will be playing in the postseason, and if they’re smart, will try to acquire any of the couple bodies with value on this Cubs team at the deadline to improve their chances, the Cubs will be playing meaningless baseball by August, if not sooner. This team is ticketed straight towards the bottom of the MLB; they’re already there FYI.

This weekend series was a complete joke. It was a reminder of everything we don’t want to be reminded of. Sure, the Cubs will win some games… not many. 500 would be an absolute miracle. No, what we can look forward to, are more of our good players, the few that we have, being moved elsewhere; it’s going to get worse before it gets better. I had said I was going to hold my judgment of the whole trade deadline fiasco last year until I saw the team the Cubs would field this year; well, I see it… we all see it. It’s embarrassing; there’s absolutely no excuse. For this to be the same guy that helped bring a World Series title here… it’s just crazy to see how they have absolutely dismantled the perennial playoff team that we had. For those that liked those moves, you happy now? I know, I know… just wait 3-4 years, and the Cubs will be back… because of the great financial position we’re in now, and all the draft picks we acquired via the dumping. What a joke! Morale is low…
