April 29, 2022: No First Round Pick

And with the X pick of the first round of the 2022 NFL draft, the Chicago Bears select… nobody. Yeah, kind of a buzzkill. All the hype around the first round of the NFL draft, this year being in Vegas, and the Bears don’t have one. I sent a text to my Raider guy, about how no first round pick sucks; he sent me back this: With the 22nd pick of the 2022 draft the Raiders select Devonte Adams WR!!! Great way to look at it; surely he’s better than anybody taken in the first round on Thursday night in Vegas. I guess us Bears fans can say something similar. The reason we don’t have a pick is because we moved up to grab Justin Fields; are you telling me you’d rather have one of the QBs coming out this year? Don’t think so.

Speaking of QBs… the first one taken was at 20, by the Pittsburgh Steelers, from the University of Pittsburgh no less; didn’t they just acquire a QB… yeah, guy named Trubisky. Not a whole lot of confidence there… rightfully so IMO. But yeah, although it sucks to not have a first round pick, it feels pretty good to have our QB in place… that is, assuming Fields will take the next step this year, and eventually blossom into a franchise type guy that will bring a Super Bowl back to Chicago of course.

The Bears will have some picks from here on out. Who will they take? There is no shortage of needs. The offensive line, wide receivers, and cornerbacks are at the top of the list IMO. We don’t need a QB or RB, but even the defensive line and linebackers wouldn’t be horrible if it’s someone we’re in love with. No kickers or punters, right? I’m even thinking trading down to get more picks may be the way to go. It’ll be interesting to see how Poles and Eberflus handle their first draft together.

Speaking of WRs, lots of them on the move. The above mentioned Adams, Tyreek, and then Hollywood and AJ last night. The Bears haven’t had any WR come their way yet; why not? People seem to be getting impatient already with Poles; that’s kind of crazy. Sure, do I want the Bears to win now? Of course. Was I upset Mack was dumped? Yes. Am I done with Poles? No, heck no. He’s just getting started. We have to give him a chance. Whatever his strategy is, being patient, etc, let him do his thing. We may not agree with it, but we should let it play out. Plus, if there is any time where GMs have a little wiggle room, it’s at the start of their tenure. How long is his rope? Certainly longer than a couple years I would think… It will be interesting to see how Poles proceeds both with the draft and any other acquisitions before the season begins. Building around Fields seems to make the most sense right now; I think Poles and Eberflus get that, no?

Even with the Bears having no draft picks last night, we still tuned in. In fact, between the rotation of Cubs, NBA, and the NFL draft, my son wanted to stay on the draft more than not; crazy… even at 10 years old, he knows that football is king. It’d probably help if the Cubs were any good; obviously if the Bulls were still in it, we’d be on that. Chicago above all, but… the draft is pretty cool, and by even catching the attention of a 10 year old, with his team having zero picks, feels like the NFL will be king for a long time. With the 39th overall pick, the Bears select….??? Bear Down!!!
