March 15, 2022: Tru or False

Trubisky to the Steelers huh? Very interesting… I guess what were the other options for the Steelers. I imagine they’ll still try to draft one as well. I get it. Taking a flyer on a guy who came from a questionable offensive system headed by Matt Nagy. A guy who was drafted high… a guy who Ryan Pace hitched our future to… a guy who, frankly, wasn’t that good. It wasn’t JUST Nagy guys, but don’t tell the Steelers that; they’ll find out eventually.

I have nothing against Mitch. It wasn’t his fault that the Bears mortgaged part of their future to draft him. It wasn’t his fault that Ryan Pace fell in love with him to the point of not doing his due diligence on one of the most important draft picks in recent Bears history. I remember that night, when I dropped an F bomb in front of my son for the first time. I didn’t like the pick, but… I rode with it; I had to. The whole Glennon/Fox debacle in Mitch’s first year was a joke; again, not his fault. I do remember 2018… The combo of Trubisky-Nagy, along with a world class defense, seemed like something that would actually work. Up until Parkey’s moment of infamy, that season was looking like it could be something really special. Trubisky was part of that, for sure. One of my favorite things about Mitch was his elusiveness in the pocket, sensing the pressure, scrambling, buying time and/or running downfield. This was one of his strengths, no doubt; not sure why we didn’t see this as much his remaining years in a Bears uni.

After 2018… not so good. The Trubisky-Nagy combo flamed out… bad. The Bears offense was horrible. Sure, maybe the league caught on to Nagy’s gimmicky offense, but Trubisky didn’t exactly make the most of his opportunities either. How many times did he not throw to a guy wide open? I know, how many times did Bears WRs get wide open… Still, I remember a bunch. Better yet, how many times did Trubisky overthrow somebody that was wide open? Not even “wide open”, but with a step on their guy… the WR beat the CB… Mitch missed them, time, and time again. Was this Nagy’s fault too?

I didn’t want to draft Trubisky, but I DID want him to succeed here, once we did have him. I rooted for him. Shit, I bought his jersey for my son; don’t worry, I didn’t burn it… I hoped he could come through for us; I hoped he would turn into a franchise type guy, one that we don’t know anything about in our lifetimes, one that SHOULD come from the 2nd overall pick of the draft. He wasn’t that guy… he isn’t that guy. That doesn’t mean he couldn’t carve out a nice career in the NFL as a backup QB. One of the best gigs in the league, barely play, mostly an insurance policy, get paid big bucks, stick around for years. Well, Mitch believes he can be more than that; the Steelers do too. Good luck to them…

I’m not going to trash Mitch; I’m not going to jump up and down and cheer for him either. He flamed out here in Chicago; he wasn’t very good. Will he be better? He should be better with this second opportunity. Maybe in a better system, with more talent around him, he can be more successful; I’m sure this is the Steelers’ thought on the matter. Again, I get it; again, I know what we saw here in Chicago. Like I said, good luck to them… but not really. If he turns out to be a good QB, whatever… it wouldn’t be the first time somebody left Chicago and played better… as long as their interests don’t interfere with ours… we have our own stuff to worry about.
