March 9, 2022: Next Round

As we continue to catch up (been pretty fricking busy lately), let’s jump back to my son’s basketball playoffs. If you remember, which you probably don’t, the last time I wrote about this was after his first round game the week before. You know, the one where he played and scored his first bucket of the season, as his team advanced to the next round? Anyways, the next round equals the semifinals. The Wednesday night tip time of 7:45pm was the latest of the season.

I like how they did the playoffs in this league. They split the playoffs into 2 separate brackets, which meant every team made the playoffs. Not always a fan of this, especially in the MLB where 162 should mean something, but for a 6th grade grammar school basketball league… yeah, why not. The Gold bracket is the top 6 teams in the league; the Silver bracket is the bottom 6 teams. His team was the #3 seed in the Gold bracket. They would be taking on the #2 team in the semis.

If in the first round game, his team played their best game, I would say in this one, it was one of their worst. It was a “defensive battle” in other words… lots of missed shots, lots of turnovers… not too rare for a grammar school league though. The best thing about this game was that it was close… neck and neck, back and forth the whole game. It came down to the very last seconds.

It was tied with a little less than 2 minutes to play. One of the best kids on his team had struggled all game long, but he hit the shot that would give them a 2 point lead. At this point, don’t rush, be strong with the ball, make good passes, and get the win; that didn’t happen. 2-3 turnovers in the final minute gave the other team plenty of chances to tie the game up, but… they didn’t. We’re going to the finals!!!

A trip to the championship game is a pretty cool way to start off my son’s first season playing. Again, as a 4th grader, he hasn’t played much, but to get this type of experience, get his feet wet… priceless. He did get in this game for a minute or so. He actually made a really nice pass, but the kid missed the shot. He was about to take a shot, but then a foul was called on the pass to him; I swear that’s happened like 3x this year… haha. Anyways, he was super pumped about the win.

His team would go into the last game of the season as underdogs. The other team, who we did not meet during the season, but did see play, is full of kids that play 4-5x per week. They play in another league, AAU, etc. It would be a difficult challenge on Thursday evening… Would they be up for it? We find out next…
