I don’t typically watch a lot of college basketball. Some years I’ll watch more than others. We have watched a bit this year. My wife actually checks when UCLA plays, since, you know, that is where my son will be playing basketball when he gets there. This is actually how this Saturday started. I saw UCLA was on; they were playing Oregon State. I turned it on and WOW… blowout time. I think they ended up winning by 39, but we didn’t stay on that game. We flipped around, and did so for the rest of the day. Pretty crazy day to do that… did you know all top 6 teams lost on this Saturday? The #9 team lost too. 7 of the top 10 go down… in a 1 day… I think you can say it was Early Madness.
Actually, the game we ended up on after turning the UCLA game off didn’t involve a top 10 team, but it may have been the most “March” game of them all. Florida State at Virginia… what a game. FSU guy named Cleveland drives in, and lays it up for the lead with about 6 seconds left. UVA guy takes the pass all the way down the court and hits shot to take the lead; there was 0.4 on the clock, but certainly looked like they should add some… they did. 1.0 second remaining. 3/4 court pass to that guy Cleveland again, who caught, and fired from 3 point range… nothing but net. My goodness!!!
Funny enough, this day started off with a bit of madness… at my son’s grammar school game. The game went to 2OT. In 2OT, kid from the other team, chasing a loose ball, appeared to get fouled as the ball went out of bounds; instead the ball was given to my son’s team. I think there was about 5 seconds on the clock. That kid, ended up stealing the ball, dribbling down court, and making a bank shot as time expired for the win; they say, ball don’t lie. Sure, it was a loss for us, but still… very much madness going on.

Rutgers Wisconsin was cool, especially seeing Ron Harper Jr out there for the Scarlet Knights. They did end up losing though. The game we ended up with at the end of the night was #1 Gonzaga at St. Mary’s. No surprise, the Zags went down to cap off a crazy day of bball. It was fun. It would rank ahead of any other NBA game other than the Bulls I guess, although we did sneak a peek at the Nets and Bucks finish as well.
It gives us a quick idea of who to pick in the brackets in the days ahead; it gives us a shot to pick an upset. All it takes is one upset, one team that nobody else picks, to win a few rounds. All it takes is picking that top team that will go down in one of the first 2 rounds. I’ll try to do both. Although watching a few UCLA games, and a bunch of games on one day in late February will not prepare me for March properly, it gives me a glimpse… sometimes, that’s all it takes to win the bracket. Maybe it’s time I did that again. Can’t wait for March Madness to begin.
